Defiling the Temple

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 KJV
Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.

Barnes Notes says concerning defiling the Temple, which is the church and not the body of the Christian, "The figurative sense is, “If any man by his doctrines or precepts shall pursue such a course as tends to destroy the church, God shall severely punish him."

The context speaks
Of those who have defiled the church through carnalityVs 3
That carnality being manifested in the form of

Envying

Strife and

Divisions

Of those who have defiled the church through man worship
Vs 4
One says "I am of Paul" and another "I am of Apollos."

Of those who have defiled the church by laying a different foundation than Jesus Christ.
Vs 10-11

This could take the form of false doctrines about Christ or building the church on teachings other than Christ's.

How to Have a Happy Home

How to be a Successful worker

How to be Run a Great Bus Program

All may have value, but they are not to be the means by which we build.

In fact, e are not supposed to build the church at all. Jesus said, "I will build my church." If we are acting as anything other than laborers of Jesus Christ we are treading on some pretty dangerous ground.

Of those who have defiled the church by building with man's wisdom rather than God's.Vs 18-20

As important as it is to keep the physical body pure, these verses do not speak about that physical body, but the spiritual one which is our church. How the Lord must hate it when we do something that jeopardizes His body; the church.
