Bearing the Burden of Our Fathers' Sins

Lamentations 5:7 KJV
Our fathers have sinned, and are not; and we have borne their iniquities.
In Israel's case, the sins of their fathers provoked the Lord to send upon them Babylon and now they had to endure the captivity caused by their fathers' sins. They were not being punished for their fathers' sins, but they were bearing the fruit of it.

That fruit came in the form of at least two things
One, they sinned in similar ways as their fathers. They had learned sin from their parents
Two, the consequences of what their parents had done was just then coming into fruition.

It is a careless and heartless parent who does not take into consideration the things their children will have to endure because of their sins.
2 Kings 20:16-19 KJV
And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the LORD.
Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.
And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?

Hezekiah's sins provoked God to send upon Israel an enemy. When the prophet announced his response was, "Praise the Lord it won't happen in my day." That is the lack of love we see in our own days. We are careless with our choices and it is our children who will bear the burden of the decisions.

Would to God we would face up to our sins and turn from them now! Would to God we would choose to bear the burden of them right now so our children and grandchildren won't have to!
