Patience+Comfort=Hope

Romans 15:4 KJV
For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

This passage gives us an easy to use guide for the use of the Scriptures: The Bible (especially the Old Testament) was written for our learning. Through the Word of God we gain

Patience
We see the plan of God being carried out in the lives of multitudes of believers.
We see some who were faithful but did not yet receive their promises.
We see some who were persecuted, but held to their faith.
We see believers who were rewarded for their faith and we see the ungodly judged for their wickedness.
And through it all we learn we can patiently wait upon the Lord.

Comfort
There are so many things in the Bible that deliver comfort and encouragement to the believer who has been beaten down in this world. When times are sore for us we turn to the Word of God and find reason to have joy and to rejoice in the promises of God.

Hope
Through the patience and comfort we receive from the Word of God comes hope; a reason to look ahead not with dread but with anticipation.
