Endeavoring to keep the unity.
It is wise for us to see unity as an endeavor because even among believers things spring up and trouble us.
Unity is a effort. It is a work that must be brought forth with
• Thought
• Planning
• Organization and
• Sweat
The context is the doctrine of the church as this "whole new thing." As new people were brought into the church they were all formerly Jews and Gentiles. In each case there were some pre conceived problems surrounding their former opinions and what is now this new thing, the relationship among them in the church.
Based on the doctrine of the church then, they were urged to walk worthy - with lowliness meekness and longsuffering and forbearing, and not with vanity uncleanness and greediness.
Nothing worthwhile in life comes without a price. Even so it is with peace in the local church. If we are to have it, we will need to endeavor to get it.
