Bigger and Better?

Galatians 5:1 KJV
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

One of the most challenging things in Christianity has been the challenge to stay free of entanglements.
  • We are so easily entangled in religious rules
  • We are so easily entangled in political movements
  • We are so easily entangled in governmental affairs
Christians seem to constantly battle for the liberty to worship Christ according to the dictates of personal conscience and not someone else's expectations for our worship.

Whole Christian systems are designed, not to aide you in spiritual maturity but to enlist you into a political/religious agenda. Well meaning men recruit eager Christians around their cause and these Christians sign up because, well, because people have been signing up for bigger things since forever. The history of Christianity, like the history of Europe and later the history of America is one of big things getting bigger.[1]

But this is not the picture we find in the Bible. Christ moved His followers out of the politics of both government and religion and led them to a personal and intimate relationship with Him.

I am not recommending we get out of churches but I am recommending churches get out of politics. I am also reminding each of us to attach ourselves to a church committed to equipping us to walk with God personally and not just using us as a part of its own bigger agenda.

[1] And not necessarily better.
