Make Now Count

Genesis 29:14 KJV
And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month.

As I read this chapter my mind returned to that day when his mother, fearing Esau's anger, sent him to Haran for a few days. She assured Jacob that when things had settled down she would send for him. Jacob went on his journey east and stayed with his uncle a month. As far as the Bible tells us, Rebecca never did send for him. The way I see it one of two things might have happened:
Rebecca never did send for him
Perhaps she never did feel certain that Esau's anger had settled. Feelings of guilt for her part in the deception may have distorted her own interpretation of Esau's spirit. Perhaps Jacob looked and looked for that letter from home and it never came.

Jacob's interests compelled him to stay
We know he came to love Rachel. What if a letter from mom did arrive but Jacob was too involved with Rachel to return home? Maybe it was Rebecca who watched the horizon for her beloved son, succumbing finally to death, disappointed at never seeing him again.

We often make promises about the future that we have no way of guaranteeing. The fact is all we know we have is right now. Rebecca sent her son away during a terrible time of stress. They never saw each other again and never made right what they had together done wrong.

We have right now. Make right now count.
