That Old Rock Which is Christ

Numbers 27:18-20 KJV
And the LORD said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him;
And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight.
And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient.

It seems to me that, at every transition in God's work with Israel, God set a man to carry Israel through that transition:
·       Joseph took them from Canaan to Egypt
·       Moses took them from Egypt through the wilderness
·       Joshua brought them from the wilderness into the Promised Land
·       Samuel transitioned them from judges to a monarchy and
·       John the Baptist brought them from the Law to the Gospel

I think the reason for this one prominent character who spans the transition is for continuity. Though transitions are natural and happen under the plan of God:
·       God's nature
·       God's Word and indeed
·       God's plan
never changes.

There is a great need for those who carry today's generation through the turmoils of the day and remind them that God has not changed. The faith that was once committed to the saints is the same today as it was two thousand years ago. The current of this world has swept away much that is familiar but it has not moved that old rock which is Christ.

Cherish the men who remind us of that!
