1 Timothy 1:8 (KJV) Using the Law Lawfully

1 Timothy 1:8 (KJV)
But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
I suppose there have always been those who, through position, learn how to manipulate the law so that it favors them.
  • The police officer who, by simply identifying himself as an officer, can get away with breaking the speed limit
  • The attorney who learns how to manipulate words so as to get himself or his client off the hook for breaking the law
  • The legislature who uses his office as an excuse for not being liable to the very laws he has made
This passage is speaking of a different law, the law of God and specifically the Old Testament law.
Those who profess to be teachers of the Word of God ought to at least know the proper use of the Old Testament law in the New Testament world. I believe there are three biblical and therefore lawful uses of the law:
To demonstrate the development of biblical truth.
This includes:
  • Where man came from,
  • What is his original purpose and
  • How that purpose was spoiled
It also involves the development of God’s plan of redemption through one born of the family of Abraham.
To provide examples and illustrations of the blessings of the faithful and the destruction of the unbelievers.
As a schoolmaster to bring us to Christ.
The law demonstrates that no man could earn his righteousness through the law because no man can sufficiently keep it.
There has been but one who perfectly obeyed that law, it was Jesus – who then died as a criminal to be the substitute for all who are criminals.
