1 Peter 4:6 (KJV) Those Before Us Heard the Gospel

1 Peter 4:6 (KJV)
For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
Sometimes the most obvious and sensible understanding of a passage is the last one that comes to the mind.
  • Our corrupt nature,
  • Our foggy spiritual facilities and
  • Our constant pressure to be conformed to this world
forces into our heads interpretations of Scripture that are unnatural.
Let’s just say it plain. The most sensible interpretation of this passage is that the Gospel was preached to generations before us, and those who believed it and were born again.
There is no need to impose upon this passage any of the fantastical ideas some have held. There is certainly no reason to twist it into the Calvinist doctrine of preaching the gospel even to those who are dead in sin and unable to respond and be saved.
All the passage means is that the Gospel that we have heard and believed, and that changed our lives and gave us hope of heaven, has also been preached to those who have gone before.
And it had the same effect in them.
