Luke 7:2-5 (KJV)
And a certain centurion’s servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die.And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant.And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this:For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue.

This passage has a happy ending. The servant is healed and Jesus lauds the faith of the Centurion. Nevertheless there are some very human elements is the account.
The first is that, he sent someone else to get Jesus
This could have been on account of his servant’s condition and not wanting to leave him. More likely it is because this centurion is used to sending others to do his bidding. We always miss out when we miss seeing Jesus personally.

Secondly, he sent elders of the Jews
Did he believe they would have some influence over Jesus? Jesus came in direct contradiction to the traditions these elders had established in Israel. Religion had no influence with God.

Thirdly the Jews cited his worth
He loved their nation and he had built them a synagogue. Why is it we put God and country together so tightly? That is a Catholic/Protestant concept, the marriage of church and state, and has been the justification of the martyrdoms of countless faithful believers.

Despite all of these very human faults, however, his request was answered.
I suppose that it is the case of every one of us that there is a lot of human fault in the passage of our life;
- We miss Jesus personally when we could have seen Him
- We expect Jesus to be impressed with things that matter little to God or
- We base our own worth on things of insignificance
I do not want to lessen the importance of obedience and sound doctrine, but I do mean to highlight the importance of faith.
To trust God without reservation, this is the root of successfully living for Christ.
