Obadiah 1:5 (KJV) Absolute Retribution

Obadiah 1:5 (KJV)
If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?
The Lord cometh as a thief in the night.[1]
The just and perfectly righteous God likens Himself to the thief who plunders the house or robs the fruit of the field.
In describing the judgment upon Edom, God implies absolute retribution.
If a thief broke into the house, he would leave somethingHaste would dictate he work fast, take that which is easiest to carry and of most value. Some items would be too large and not valuable enough to risk being caught taking.
If the perpetrator stole the grapes from the field, he would surely miss someWorking in cover of darkness or perhaps in that moment when the harvester broke for a meal, he would certainly be unsuccessful in taking the whole.
But when God brings His judgment there is no stopping Him, but for His mercy.Whether it is:
  • The nation of Edom in old, or
  • Governments of the world or
  • Individuals in any time of life
our hope is only the mercy of God.
Anyone would be wise to seek it.
