Leviticus 25:39-43 (KJV)
And if thy brother that dwelleth by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant:But as an hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, and shall serve thee unto the year of jubile:And then shall he depart from thee, both he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return.For they are my servants, which I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondmen.Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.

Leviticus 25:55 (KJV)
For unto me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

Here is the great reason to treat people, of any stature, with dignity and respect – they are first responsible to God.
Regardless of a person’s status, whether they have substance or not, whether they are in need or those able to provide for needs, it is of little consequence because they are each of them God’s servants.
This is especially true of those who are saved. I believe a case can be made for treating those who are not Christians with respect, but there is no question that we, who belong to God, should treat others who belong to God with great dignity.
Imagine that someone claims to love and respect you. Their words, their actions and their demeanor all point to this love. There is but one exception; they mistreat your children. All else is come to nothing for this one thing. It doesn’t matter that your children have misbehaved or that they are not the smartest or strongest or most popular children, to mistreat them is to mistreat you.
God views the mistreatment of His own in much this same way. To mistreat His servants is to mistreat God.
