Hebrews 8:12 (KJV) A Promise of Mercy

Hebrews 8:12 (KJV)
For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
That this passage relates to our current age and not to an eternal one is apparent. We live in an age of mercy, an age of grace. There is coming an age when neither will be required because no unrighteousness will enter there.
As for today, the promise of mercy is that much more impressive because the unrighteousness of men grows, it seems, daily.
Romans 5:20
Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
There is great comfort in hoping in God’s mercy in such a time of unrighteousness as this. The cycle of liberty of conscience, so abundantly poured out in the last two and a half centuries, has nearly come to an end. We will require that mercy now as much as any time in history.
Romans 6:1-2
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
The promise of mercy is not equivalent to permission for unrighteousness. The darker the day, the more important it will be that our lamps are trimmed, filled and set high for others to see.
