Something wonderful, generous, and loving—something expressing the deep reality of Christ’s work in the heart of a man—had just occurred.
Acts 4:34–37 (KJV)
Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet.
The work of Christ in the hearts of men—demonstrated for more than two thousand years now—is powerful evidence that Christ is alive and at work. There are men and women still today whose lives, motives, and character are so radically changed through their relationship with Christ that it is simply inexplicable apart from Christ.
But.
And here has always been the rub.
For every one whose life is genuinely transformed by Christ, there is at least one in whom Satan fills the heart to lie, twist, manipulate, and abuse what God is doing.
There are countless accounts of God’s amazing works among men.
But.
Those who choose to reject Christ can always point to examples of charlatans, fakes, liars, connivers, and crooks who use the name of Christ for devious purposes.
I can’t stop them. I wouldn’t want to try. What I can do is preach the Word, trust the Lord to work, and praise God for those whose lives are sincerely changed.
