1 Timothy 3:14 (KJV) Hope or Pray?

1 Timothy 3:14 (KJV)

These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:

Paul said he had hoped to come to Ephesus, to Timothy, and to the church he pastored there, some time shortly after writing this letter. He was never to make that trip and soon after realized it and wrote his second letter to the same. I think the second letter is meant to set in order the things he left out of this one regarding the church.

I try as often as possible to avoid the word hope and to instead pray for things. My hope is in Christ as my Saviour, and that is a solid, secure, and sure hope. It will come to pass as surely as the sun rose this morning and will again tomorrow.

I have this confident hope in Christ, but of nothing else can I be so sure. So for those things, I had better pray. I can leave my petitions before the Lord and trust that whatever His will on those matters, it will be the best.

I had rather pray than hope.

I cannot deny, however, that there are things for which I hope. Some of them have worked out. Others have not.

Knowing my hopes are never sure, it’s best for me to plan in the event they do not.
