And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.
Saul of Tarsus had heard the preaching of Stephen and had consented unto his death. I am not certain of this, but I believe he may have heard the preaching of Jesus Christ personally. He was certainly in Jerusalem during the days of Christ—perhaps even witnessing His crucifixion.
Still, in his zeal for his religion, he persecuted the Christians.
Then came the day he met the Lord, and with it the opportunity of a lifetime: “Who art thou, Lord?” Saul had never questioned the existence of God. He had never doubted that the Lord is. But he did wonder who He is.
And in that season of wondering, rather than searching, rather than surrendering, he “kicked against the pricks.” The goading of the Holy Ghost, the conviction of his sin, was real. He sensed it, felt it, and was agitated and aggravated by it. And like many do when agitated, he fought against it.
Until this day.
This was the day he finally learned what he had longed to know for so long. And it changed his life eternally: “I am Jesus, whom thou persecutest.”
As a preacher of the gospel, I have encountered many people who are agitated by the Word.
- The atheist who insists Jesus is a myth—or at the very least, that He never resurrected.
- The Muslim who insists that Jesus is a lesser prophet than Mohammed.
- The religionist who insists that Jesus is the one of his own choosing, and not the One revealed in the Bible.
- Sometimes it is the nominal Christian—one who believes, but does not want to be held accountable to Christ for a lack of faithfulness.
They kick against the pricks of truth they hear from the Bible. They resist the Word of God. Sometimes they persecute those who preach the truth or live it out.
It is not that they do not believe. It is that they have not searched out the truth of Jesus and surrendered to that truth.
My prayer is that they will do so—before they must bow before Him in hell.
