Amos 1:9 (KJV) To Forsake a Friendship

Amos 1:9 (KJV)
Thus saith the LORD; For three transgressions of Tyrus, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they delivered up the whole captivity to Edom, and remembered not the brotherly covenant:
It seems relatively certain that the covenant spoken of is that between Hiram and David, then Solomon.
1 Kings 5:1 (KJV)
And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants unto Solomon; for he had heard that they had anointed him king in the room of his father: for Hiram was ever a lover of David.
Friendships, though often fickle, are more necessary than we might think. They are indeed a bond that only those without natural affection dare to break. They are not merely casual, they are covenants.
To have a friend, to experience “the brotherly covenant,” is a privilege that is nearly criminal to forsake.

Mark 12:41-44 (KJV) It’s Thrown Out

Mark 12:41-44 (KJV)
And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much. And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing. And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
The words “cast” and “threw” are the very same Hebrew word. It means, “to throw more or less violently”. It is used of both the rich man’s abundance and the Widow’s penury.
Though each gave with varying degrees of consequence and of faith, each gave with the same expectation; that the offering was no longer theirs.
They had as much as thrown it out:
  • It was now out of their hands
  • It was the concern of someone else
This is the same expectation with which we ought to give to the Lord.
  • We give voluntarily
  • We give faithfully
  • We give abundantly and
  • We give completely,
  • With no strings attached

Mark 11:33 (KJV) Don’t Answer That

Mark 11:33 (KJV)
And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.
Jesus knew that the Pharisees were looking for something to accuse Him of. He also knew they already knew by what authority He claimed to operate. They didn’t need an answer so He gave them none. He stopped the question by simply saying, “Neither tell I you.” There were things they didn’t feel compelled to answer therefore there were things He was not compelled to answer either.
One of the great mistakes we make as believers is that we often believe we have to say something, we have to give an answer to every question.
Paul said to be ready to answer every man concerning the hope within us. That is to tell them our testimony of salvation. We do not have try to answer every question they present, especially if they are insincere in asking.

Mark 10:21 (KJV) Are You Lacking Something?

Mark 10:21 (KJV)
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
The thing about good works is that the doer will always lack “one thing.”This rich young ruler had done all he knew to do, all he could do. Yet he knew he had not yet inherited eternal life.
He recognized Christ as good and even as a master.
He came, I believe, sincerely. But he left sadly because he still lacked the one good thing that would have earned him eternal life. If he had sold all that he had he would still have lacked one thing. The key to the passage is not the selling of goods but the following of Christ.
As long as you are looking for some good thing to do to earn eternal life, you’ll never do enough.
As soon as you make Christ your all, you’ll never have a problem doing that good thing again.

Hosea 11:1 (KJV) Pictures are Pictures

Hosea 11:1 (KJV)
When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
I was impressed that Israel is referred to in the masculine gender. Generally, when speaking of a nation of people they are referred to in the feminine. Indeed, Israel is pictured as a wife[1], married to God, even in this book. Yet here Israel is a “him”.
The possible explanation would be that this is a specific reference to Jacob as an individual and not as the nation. He is clearly spoken of at the end of the next chapter. But this possibility is eliminated within the verse, as Jacob was not individually called out of Egypt.
My point is that we must not make more out of the types and pictures of the Bible than are there.
I have been in communication just this week with a man who insists that the church, as New Testament Christians understand it, cannot exist. God has, in his view, just one bride who is Israel. He cannot be an adulterer therefore the New Testament bride must not be a Scriptural entity. Another man, a pastor and much used Bible teacher, justified his own multiple divorces and subsequent remarriages by claiming God is divorced from Israel and espoused to the New Testament church.
But pictures are pictures and not substance. They serve to illustrate truths but they are not the truths they illustrate.
Many a false doctrine has been born through making more of a type than we ought.
[1] Albeit unfaithful.

Mark 8:2-3 (KJV) Our “Inner Fridge”

Mark 8:2-3 (KJV)
I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat:And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: for divers of them came from far.
It is obvious that the people of Jesus’ day ate much less than the average American does – and that his food was of a much different nature.
We may assume that many in this multitude had eaten some food in this three-day period. The narrative sounds more like, after three days, the food they had taken was used up. Jesus was concerned that their bodies were empty of the fuel they would need to safely return home. Having eaten at least one meal in this three-day period, Jesus knew them to be too weak to get home without food.
This interests me because the average American has enough energy stored in his body, via fat cells, to easily survive two weeks with nothing but water and perhaps some salt. Many modern athletes now practice fasting for days before and during competitive events. Once we get passed the false hunger pains at about day two or three, when our bodies convert from using sugar to fat for energy, we can go many days without experiencing loss of energy or hunger.
I am reminded to be thankful. We have so much food that, if our cupboards were bare, we could live handily on the food we have stored up in our “inner fridge”.

Mark 7:14-23 (KJV) Those Who Have Ears Know This

Mark 7:14-23 (KJV)
And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.If any man have ears to hear, let him hear. And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats? And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
Jesus didn’t address the Scribes and Pharisees with his answer to their question about eating with unwashed hands. He called the multitude and used the question as a teaching moment.  Even then He narrowed the audience to “If any man have ears“. There was one audience He essentially ignored and another he dismissed. The lesson would only “take” in those who would listen to what He said.
I have known a number who use this passage to rail against separation and standards. They say this passage tells us that outward influences don’t matter. All that matters is that the heart is right with the Lord.
  • Music
  • Alcohol
  • Tobacco
  • Marijuana
These things in their eyes are just fine so long as they are used in moderation and the heart is tuned to Christ.
The parable teaches exactly the opposite.
We should interpret the passage within the passage. Jesus listed those worldly and sinful things that come from the heart. His list clearly demonstrates that those things He meant could enter and be expelled were of one nature and those things that would come out of an evil heart were a different nature.
It is not more acceptable to ingest evil than it is to let it out of the heart.
Separation from worldliness and evil is a Biblical lesson reinforced from Genesis to Revelation.
Those who have ears know this.

Mark 6:2-6 (KJV) Though They Were Astonished

Mark 6:2-6 (KJV)
And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands? Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.
Jesus is, in the Christian mind, the greatest teacher of all time. It is impossible that He would be anything else. He is God.
  • He is perfect
  • He is all wise
  • He is the standard of right
The crowd acknowledged His ability, being astonished as He preached. But notice that, though they were astonished:
  • They were offended and
  • They did not believe
In some measure every faithful preacher has experienced this.
People are astonished at the message we preachIt is so different than they have heard before. It is so opposed to what they think.
People are offended at the message we preachIt is opposed to everything they have heard and all their worldly minds have conceived and they dislike it.
People will not believe the message we preachThe most successful preachers reach but a tiny fraction of those they reach out to.
If Jesus experienced this we must not be surprised that we do too.

Mark 5:17 (KJV) Whether They Want Him or Not

Mark 5:17 (KJV)
And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.
I understand that the word pray is not being used in the strictly spiritual sense in this passage. Those who prayed to Jesus neither believed Him to be God nor placed any spiritual meaning to this prayer. They merely desired Jesus leave their country. Knowing full well that he had delivered this man who they knew could not be tamed of the demons driving him wild, their response was to be rid of Jesus.
I wonder how often our prayers parallel theirs?
  • I wonder if, in practice, we wish Jesus would just leave us alone?
  • I wonder if we would prefer He not work miracles that make us uncomfortable?
  • I wonder if we would rather He not send his Spirit to convict us of sin, of righteousness and of judgment?
Jesus healed this man.
Jesus is whom every man needs whether they want Him or not.

Mark 4:19 (KJV) Addicted to “Other Things”

Mark 4:19 (KJV)
And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
I am struck with the phrase “the lusts of other things.
Those things that choke the Word of God out of our life can be nearly anything.
  • They don’t necessarily have to be wicked
  • They don’t necessarily have to be bad
  • They don’t necessarily have to be selfish
  • They don’t necessarily have to be harmful
They could be perfectly good things in and of themselves but, lusting for them, they have become a weed in the spiritual garden and kill off that which is essential to the spiritual life.
Care must be taken to never be addicted to anything but the things of God.

Mark 3:1-2 (KJV) Pettiness

Mark 3:1-2 (KJV)
And he entered again into the synagogue; and there was a man there which had a withered hand. And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the sabbath day; that they might accuse him.
  • Again it is a Sabbath day
  • Again there is someone in need
  • Again Jesus is there
This describes, I think, every service in the house of God.
  • Jesus is there and
  • Someone needs Him
But there were some whose whole attention was accusing Jesus. For them it did not matter who Jesus is or what He could do. They had little or no concern for the needy man. They had no interest in spiritual truth. They were only concerned with their disagreement with Jesus.
“Lord open the eyes of souls to something bigger and better than their pettiness.”

Mark 2:15-16 (KJV) The Challenge of Our Day

Mark 2:15-16 (KJV)
And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
The question by the scribes and Pharisees was asked in derision, “How is it that He eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?” They would have considered this to be beneath someone of dignity. They would have never considered tainting themselves with those “garments spotted by the flesh.”
I think there is another question worthy of asking, “How is it that these publicans and sinners followed Jesus?
There is no question in my mind that they needed Him. They were not whole; He was the only physician capable of helping them. But in our day and age, it is not often that the worst of the worst see in Christianity an answer to their disease.
I watched a history course a couple of years ago that explained Christianity on a bell curve. According to their curve, Christianity has reached its peak and is scientifically destined to decline into insignificance. I do not believe Christianity is declining into insignificance, but I do believe that, as we approach the end of this world, the darkness of evil will appear to overcome.
The challenge of the day is whether we will trust the “science” of modern thinkers or “faith” of the Word of God.
I choose the Word of God.

Hosea 6:1-2 (KJV) Reconciliation is a Return

Hosea 6:1-2 (KJV)
Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he hath torn, and he will heal us; he hath smitten, and he will bind us up.After two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.
Here is a beautiful invitation of reconciliation to God.
It is a returnOf course this passage is addressed first to Israel who, as the people of God, had turned from Him. It is true, however, that in the broader sense all humanity was originally God’s. It was through the fall of Adam and Eve man turned from God. In a real sense everyone who turns to God returns to God.
It is a response to chasteningIt is God who has torn and smitten us. He has either lifted the restraints of evil or directed some form of judgment to correct and get the attention of men.
It is a promise of healingThe parent who disciplines his child is the same who protects, nurtures and comforts his child.
It is all accomplished through the gospel. The reference to being raised the third day is, if not more, a reminder of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ after three days and three nights.

Hosea 3:2-4 (KJV) Sanctification and Spiritual Growth

Hosea 3:2-4 (KJV)
So I bought her to me for fifteen pieces of silver, and for an homer of barley, and an half homer of barley:And I said unto her, Thou shalt abide for me many days; thou shalt not play the harlot, and thou shalt not be for another man: so will I also be for thee. For the children of Israel shall abide many days without a king, and without a prince, and without a sacrifice, and without an image, and without an ephod, and without teraphim:
Though he has recovered his wife and bought her from the slave market; all is not as before. At least not yet.
Hosea imposes a period of perfecting.
  • There were commitments he expected her to keep
  • They were the same as he promised her he would keep
Restoration of relationships is no small thing. Violations must not be swept under the rug. Immediate forgiveness is essential of course, but restoration will take time and commitment.
We must never forget, however, that the primary lesson, in Hosea, is not concerning relationships but the relationship Israel has with God.
God:
  • Loves
  • Forgives
  • Saves
But then He expects:
  • Sanctification and
  • Spiritual growth

Matthew 27:41-42 (KJV) Believers Believe by Faith

Matthew 27:41-42 (KJV)
Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.
As much as things change, so much the more they are the same.
The chief priests and scribes and elders said that if Jesus would come down from the cross they would believe Him.
  • Haven’t we all wished even prayed that God would do something so miraculous so undeniable that people, especially those we love and those in power would believe in Him?
  • Haven’t we cried out in anguish because it just seemed so obvious that, if God would just answer this one prayer, or that one, these people would believe?
But so often He doesn’t answer.
When it seems so clear that:
  • For the good of mankind,
  • For the good of a family,
  • For the good of a church,
He should answer, He doesn’t.
Two thoughts:
One, it would not have been for the good of anyone had Jesus come down from the cross.Salvation was accomplished on the Cross. Praise God He did not come down!
Two, never forget these men were mocking.Truth is that no one believes for the miracles. Jesus did them and thus proved Himself to be the Christ but believers believe by faith, not by miracles.

Daniel 11:1-2 (KJV) God’s Angelic Brigade

Daniel 11:1-2 (KJV)
Also I in the first year of Darius the Mede, even I, stood to confirm and to strengthen him.And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer than they all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all against the realm of Grecia.
The angel claims to have come for two purposes:
To strengthen and confirm God’s planThis being God’s plan that Israel be returned to the Promised Land according to the decree of Cyrus. This would require:
  • Confirming the decision in the mind of Cyrus (and subsequently Darius)
  • Quenching the attempts of others to distract Cyrus from his decision and
  • Urging the Jews, who had grown complacent in Babylon to return and rebuild.
To show Daniel the truthTruth is the Word of God as the Holy Spirit of God illuminates it. No work is so needful than that God’s Word be revealed to us. Having God’s Word is a blessing but it requires the teaching ministry of the Spirit to show us the truth in it.
God’s angelic brigade can be confidently assumed to do these same ministries for all praying saints:
  • Strengthening and confirming His will for them and
  • Showing them the truth in God’s Word

Daniel 9:4 (KJV) Our Stay in Trouble

Daniel 9:4 (KJV)
And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;
Daniel’s prayer weaves two key principles repeatedly together:
That God is righteous
Regardless of the difficulties men experience because of His plans, He is righteous.
That we have sinned
And thus, deserve whatever is the hardship of that plan. God promises that His intentions toward us are good and not evil.[1] In times of difficulty that must be our stay.
This dichotomy of thought divides the sheep from the goats. Those who hear the voice of God accept his will as righteous and good. Those who refuse his voice reject the premise of Daniel’s prayer.
[1] Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
