1 Chronicles 29:1 (KJV) A Course God Alone Has Chosen

1 Chronicles 29:1 (KJV)

Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.

King David was confident that Solomon was to be king following him.

  • He did not choose Solomon
  • God chose Solomon and
  • God chose Solomon alone; only Solomon

Interestingly, others were not so confident.

Adonijah set about to make himself king

  • Joab David’s general
  • Abiathar, the priest and
  • An untold number of guests

set about to help him.[1]

Perhaps they believed David had made the choice and not God. It is human nature to see men’s activity and miss God’s working through them.

I suspect, given what we know of Joab, especially that none of these men had any genuine faith in God. Certainly, Joab was an opportunist. Even the priest, Abiathar, could have been more interested in the business of the priesthood than the God of the priesthood. Adonijah was simply selfish and spoiled. He had no care for God or his father. He only wanted what he wanted.

We must be so careful that we set our eyes upon the Lord. God has a course that He alone has chosen. It is not ours to pick our own path, our own faith, our own means of living for Him.

God has made but one way. It is strait, and it is narrow.

By all means, take heed to be on this road.

[1] 1 Kings 1:7 (KJV)
And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.

1 Chronicles 16:24 (KJV) How Rare It Is

1 Chronicles 16:24 (KJV)

Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.

One of the great lessons of the Old Testament is how rare it is to find a man like David.

I don’t mean to sound pessimistic or cynical. I mean only to provoke the souls of men, as I believe David desired to do.

This song was meant to urge people to:

  • “shew forth from day to day His salvation” and to
  • “Declare His glory among the heathen “

Some did that. But too many, maybe even most, found something among the heathen they glorified in.

  • They wanted a king like the heathen
  • They had high places like the heathen
  • They often worshipped the gods of the heathen
  • One even replaced God’s altar with one like the heathen had

It is rare indeed to find those who will shew people God’s plan of salvation every day and who will tell the heathen, the ungodly, those who are opposed to the Word of God.

We are not to copy them or be like them. Neither are we to ignore them. Instead, we are to go to them and tell them about God’s glory and God’s marvelous works.

1 Chronicles 11:18 (KJV) Wasted on the LORD

1 Chronicles 11:18 (KJV)

And the three brake through the host of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem, that was by the gate, and took it, and brought it to David: but David would not drink of it, but poured it out to the LORD,

Robert Hawker says he does not know who to admire most, the three who hazarded their lives for a mere drink of water for David or David for having such respect for their effort as not to waste it on himself.

I have three immediate thoughts:

First, what caution one in leadership must have

David merely breathed a reflective wish. I do not believe he wished someone actually to get the water, nor imagined that anyone would have. He may not have even known they heard him.

Second, what a heart these men must have had

I cannot find in the Bible where their names are recorded, but they are the three mightiest of David’s mighty men. God, grant me such humility and love for your Son that I do not need the acknowledgment of men. It is enough that I love you.

Third, what grace David displayed

He would not use this treasure for personal gain or refreshment. To pour it on the ground may have seemed a waste to both him and his men. No one took it that way. Just as the woman broke the alabaster box and poured its ointment on Christ, this water was poured out in gratitude to the Lord God of Israel.

May leaders learn to allow the gifts of the people they lead to be wasted on the Lord and not feel they deserve it. May givers sacrifice their treasures and reserve no judgment toward their use.

1 Chronicles 10:14 (KJV) Religious But Lost

1 Chronicles 10:14 (KJV)

And enquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse.

God’s Word lists a series of offenses which led to the death of King Saul. The final one was that he “enquired not of the Lord.” There is some difficulty here because the Bible says in 1 Samuel 28:6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. There Saul did enquire but God did not answer.

Students of the Bible have proposed several ways to reconcile this:

  • He did not enquire in the right manner
  • He did not enquire at the proper time
  • He did not enquire in this instance

The Hebrew word translated enquire means to follow or to seek. I believe his transgression was not that he never looked to God but that he did not live as a follower of God.

That King Saul was religious, there can be no doubt. He was a Jew. He believed the Jewish traditions. He embraced the concept of the one God of the Hebrews. There were moments in his life when his religious nature manifested itself brightly:

  • In his honest and humble character when we are first introduced to him
  • In his prophesying with the prophets just after his anointing

He had a close, though not submissive relationship with Samuel. He was interested in the blessing of God, and he wanted to do those things that would gain his blessing.

But Saul was not a follower of God. He was, to use our terms, religious but lost.

There’s the warning and lesson for us. Seeking God’s favor and even seeking God’s direction in life is not the same as seeking and following after God. God is not a genie promising to give us our wishes so long as we rub the lamp aright. He is the Almighty. It is our place to surrender to Him and obey His voice.

This Saul would not do.

Be careful to avoid his transgression.

1 Chronicles 3:5 (KJV) The Immeasurable Grace of God

1 Chronicles 3:5 (KJV)

And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel:

Behold the immeasurable grace of God!

It is sufficient of grace to think that Solomon, the child of David and Bathsheba, would become king.

Who among us needs an explanation of the circumstances bringing David and Bathsheba together? It is a crime. It is a sin of unspeakable measure what David did with Bathsheba and to her husband, Uriah. But he did it. It’s not debatable. Still, God, in inexpressible mercy, not only spared them but chose to call one of their children to be the successor to the throne and the builder of the Temple.

God had promised David that one from his seed would sit on the throne forever. That’s not the same promise He made to Solomon. There were conditions placed upon him if his seed would continue. He did not meet those conditions. By the time Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem, God had taken the throne from Solomon’s seed.

But not from David’s seed.

Not even from the union of David and Bathsheba.

Joseph was from the family of David’s son, Solomon, giving Jesus a legal claim to the throne.

Mary was from the family of David’s son, Nathan, giving Jesus the spiritual claim to the throne.

Both Solomon and Nathan were David’s seed through the same mother, Bathsheba.

Behold the immeasurable grace of God!

1 Chronicles 28:4 (KJV) He Liked Me

1 Chronicles 28:4 (KJV)

Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah to be the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make me king over all Israel:

Years ago, I spoke with a preacher friend about a desire I had for a particular ministry. I was somewhat nervous about it, not confident that the Lord would open the door for the ministry.[1] This pastor friend of mine commented, “I am sure the Lord will allow you to have this ministry. He likes you.” Though I do not remember speaking out loud, I do distinctly remember thinking, “You mean, He doesn’t like you?”

It turns out this pastor may have been on to something. David confessed that God “liked” him to make him king over all Israel. The word means to have pleasure in or to desire.

I understand that it comes from an ancient Hebrew hieroglyph of a broken potsherd – something crushed. Broken pieces of clay pots were often used to write messages, in other words, to express desires. Think of that. The thing God likes is something that is first broken, crushed, and considered perhaps good for nothing else. But when that crushed piece is chosen to place a message upon, it becomes of more excellent value than it would have been as a vessel.

Many of those ancient potsherd messages exist yet today – still testifying that the author “liked” them.

[1] It turned out that He did not.

1 Chronicles 26:27 (KJV) Spoils of War

1 Chronicles 26:27 (KJV)

Out of the spoils won in battles did they dedicate to maintain the house of the LORD.

Of the things we receive in this life I can think of three means by which they come.
There are those things gifted to us
They are more numerous than I think we imagine. The gifts parents provide are free from the moment of our birth, are costly, continual, and, for the most part, taken for granted.

There are those things we earn
Through work and industry, a person receives wages and, by those wages, procures those things he possesses in his lifetime.

There are those spoils of war
Most of us never enter into a physical battle and, if we did, the rules

have changed since biblical times. In those days, the victor held a right to all that the vanquished had possessed. They were his spoils. He owned them through victory. Though we wish never to enter physical combat, we do have battles in life. We go through times of difficulty that mold us. When we win over those difficulties, they create in us: experience, faith, strength, skills, and other life lessons.

These are properly to be dedicated to the house of the Lord. Who knows who might be helped by the lessons we have learned in the battles we have fought and won?
