Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, is yet young and tender, and the work is great: for the palace is not for man, but for the LORD God.
King David was confident that Solomon was to be king following him.
- He did not choose Solomon
- God chose Solomon and
- God chose Solomon alone; only Solomon
Interestingly, others were not so confident.
Adonijah set about to make himself king
- Joab David’s general
- Abiathar, the priest and
- An untold number of guests
set about to help him.[1]
Perhaps they believed David had made the choice and not God. It is human nature to see men’s activity and miss God’s working through them.
I suspect, given what we know of Joab, especially that none of these men had any genuine faith in God. Certainly, Joab was an opportunist. Even the priest, Abiathar, could have been more interested in the business of the priesthood than the God of the priesthood. Adonijah was simply selfish and spoiled. He had no care for God or his father. He only wanted what he wanted.
We must be so careful that we set our eyes upon the Lord. God has a course that He alone has chosen. It is not ours to pick our own path, our own faith, our own means of living for Him.God has made but one way. It is strait, and it is narrow.
By all means, take heed to be on this road.
[1] 1 Kings 1:7 (KJV)
And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped him.
