Titus 3:12 (KJV) Faithful in the Gaps

Titus 3:12 (KJV)

When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter.

Paul had earlier written,
Titus 1:5 (KJV)
For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee.

Now, in the same letter, he says, “Be diligent to come unto me.” Titus had a commission, but that didn’t mean he could never be called elsewhere. Paul was sending relief—either Artemas or Tychicus—so Titus could come to him.

That’s ministry life. Sometimes we leave the post for a season to:
– Preach a revival or conference
– Offer counsel and encouragement
– Receive additional training
– Lend a hand where help is needed

As a pastor, I've had to step away many times for these very reasons. But I always made sure someone filled the pulpit while I was gone.

Maybe Artemas was a fresh face, unknown but faithful. Maybe Tychicus, well known and seasoned, was the better fit. Either way, a temporary fill-in is a vital role. That’s how men gain experience—one faithful assignment at a time.

Being “second string” doesn’t mean being second-rate. A good man is ready to serve—whether he’s the main voice or the fill-in. The gospel goes on. The work gets done. And God gets the glory.

Faithful in the Gaps: Temporary Roles, Eternal Impact

💼 Ministry doesn’t pause when a leader steps away—it presses forward through faithful men. Whether you’re the one being called or the one stepping in, your role matters in God’s work.

Titus 2:5 (KJV) Be Good

Titus 2:5 (KJV)

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

The context has to do with what the aged women ought to teach the younger ones. The preacher must teach the aged, more mature women in the church what they should teach the younger, less mature women.

It’s likely easier to divide them as aged and young than it is as mature and immature. The aged women, who are spiritually mature, would not be offended at being termed "aged," but the young ones, who are immature, would surely get offended at being classified as such.

The aged are to teach the younger. Among the things to teach is to be “good.”

Such a simple word. We all know it and know what it means.

Good.

There are good leaders, good parents, good employees, good soldiers, good kids.

It’s common for a parent to leave their children with a sitter and say simply, “Be good.”

“You aged women—teach the younger ones to be good.”

Okay. So what does that mean? It seems so obvious that we might skip over it.

So let’s not.

Here’s the Thayer definition:

  1. Of good constitution or nature
  2. Useful, salutary
  3. Good, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy
  4. Excellent, distinguished
  5. Upright, honourable

It’s all good! But I’d settle for this: pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy.

“You aged women—teach the younger ones to be good.”

Be Good: What Does THAT Mean?

👵✨ Are you living out Titus 2:5? God calls aged women to teach the younger—to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, and good. That little word packs a powerful punch!

Titus 2:5 (KJV) Be Good

Titus 1:14 (KJV) Set Free—Stay Free in Christ

Titus 1:14 (KJV)

Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

I  suppose no one likes to be rebuked—let alone to be rebuked sharply. However, when done in the right spirit and for the right purpose, sometimes such a rebuke is necessary. The Word of God says here in Titus 1:14 that it is necessary for two reasons:

  • That they do not give heed to Jewish fables
  • That they do not give heed to “commandments of men, that turn from the truth

While I realize that the conjunction and can connect and combine the two—so that the Jewish fables and the commandments of men could be seen as one and the same. I suggest that is not the case in this context.

The Apostle had dealt with unbelieving Jews—those who had rejected Christ. They had, or rather their peers in Jerusalem had, condemned and killed the Just One. They had, as Paul once had in his former life as Saul of Tarsus, hunted down, captured, and condemned His followers.

But the Apostle Paul had also dealt with those who professed to follow Christ, yet refused to turn away from the restrictions of Judaism. These were doubly wrong. They had seen the light of Christ, entered the fellowship of the saints, and then tried to turn those same saints away from the truth—the liberty that is in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Imagine being set free from bondage, only to put the shackles back on—and worse, insisting that others put them on too.

It is appropriate, right, even the responsible thing, to rebuke such behavior.

Set Free—Stay Free in Christ: Rebuking Error to Preserve Sound Faith

🔔 False doctrine often wears the mask of tradition. Titus 1:14 warns us not to give heed to Jewish fables or the commandments of men that turn us from the truth. Biblical rebuke—done in love—isn't cruelty; it's spiritual care.

⚖️ Are you holding onto man-made religion instead of Christ-given liberty?

Titus 3:7 (KJV) Grace Alone

Titus 3:7 (KJV)

That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Justified, saved, pronounced innocent:

·       Not by works that we have done,

·       Not by the consequence of regeneration and the new man,

We are justified by grace. The gift of salvation is freely, unconditionally, and irrevocably provided by virtue of Christ alone.

·       We do not earn our justification.

·       We do not prove our justification.

·       We only gratefully receive our justification.

Justification is a gracious act of God, determined long before we were born (not in the sense that we were elected to be justified before we were born, but that God had determined how we would be justified before the foundation of the world), made real when we come to faith, and rooted in Christ’s work—not our own.
