2 John 1:7 (KJV) From Rome to the Internet

2 John 1:7 (KJV)

For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

There is, as the Word of God says, nothing new under the sun. Ideas, concepts, attitudes, and philosophies often take on different manifestations, but they are still variations of the same spirit.

What takes on the spirit of deception today may have different names than it did two thousand years ago, but it is the same trouble — it is antichrist.

Over the centuries there have been all sorts of expressions of this spirit:

• Jesus was not God but only claimed to be God.
• Jesus was a rebel against the appointed authorities.
• Jesus was not God, but merely a god.
• Jesus was a good teacher, but not the final prophet.
• Jesus did not really die on the cross.
• Jesus did not rise from the dead.
• Jesus never existed at all.

While all of these accusations are still around today, things I hear now that I did not hear 40 years ago include claims that the New Testament was not written until a couple hundred years after the first century, and that the apostles, the account of Christ, and the whole gospel story were invented as late as four hundred years after the fact.

Whatever deceptions people come up with concerning Jesus, this one thing is true: the spirit motivating them is antichrist.

2 John 1:3 (KJV) The Son of the Father

2 John 1:3 (KJV)

Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.

I want to address this very blatant phrase calling Jesus, the Son of the Father. Those Muslims and others like the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons who like to challenge my Christological position love passages such as this because, in their view, they categorically prove Jesus is not God. I believe they are guilty of two very common hermeneutical errors:

They read into the passage their preconceptions

They already know what a son is because they are one or else a daughter, which is a female version of what they already know to be a son. Their rigid definition of a son requires that he be the offspring, or in the case of Jesus, the creation of God. Mormons would claim Him to be the literal offspring of God. Even in general linguistic terms, this is not always the case. For instance, adoption produces a relationship called son without being offspring. Mentors might often call a person they’ve trained a son. A prodigy might proudly think of themselves as the son of their teacher. Bottom line, we can’t assume our definition of the word is the one employed. This leads to the second error.

They read the passage out of context

It doesn’t take tons of biblical study to see that the term son is not always used of one’s offspring. Paul called Timothy his son in the faith. Often grandchildren and even great-grandchildren are called sons. Adam is called the son of God. Angels are called the sons of God. Stars are called the sons of God. One of the definitions of the Hebrew word, according to Strong’s Concordance, is a son as implying connection in respect of membership, service, resemblance, manifestation, destiny.

Jesus is the Son of the Father in exactly the way the Bible describes Him,

Hebrews 1:3 “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person,”

John 14:9 “he that hath seen me hath seen the Father,”

Philippians 2:6 “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God,”

Colossians 2:9 “in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.”

2 John 1:4 (KJV) Ground of Truth

2 John 1:4 (KJV)

I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

It is my conviction and understanding of the Word of God that this should be viewed as a correspondence to a church, rather than to an individual. What I notice is that the Apostle rejoices not merely because the reader walks in truth but because the reader’s children do the same. I suppose the Apostle, having had personal ministry among this audience, could expect that they walked in the truth he had communicated to them. His experience with them, his observations of them might have led him to this expectation. But this, this is another matter. They not only had received the truth, obeyed the truth, and continued in the truth; they had reproduced that truth to another generation.

Of course, it is a blessing to see parents who can effectively reproduce their faith in their children. It doesn’t always happen, and because of the influences of the world and the draw of the flesh, it is not always the parents’ fault if they do not. But the real lesson goes to the churches, the pillars, and the ground of truth. If these churches had not been able to reproduce themselves, there would have been no hope of the saving gospel during these two thousand years.

No wonder the Apostle rejoiced. He had evidence before him that the labor Christ had committed to him and the others, the labor for which all the other apostles had died, was not in vain. Now an old man, having served the Lord and suffered for Him, John must have known his days on earth were but a few. He could rest easy knowing that the message of Christ and the truths He, and the other apostles, had delivered would not die with them.

We may rejoice in the same.

2 John 1:1 (KJV) “Not I Only”

2 John 1:1 (KJV)

The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth;

“Not I only”

It isn’t that John said he loves all they that have known the truth. Instead, he said all they that have known the truth love the elect lady and her children.

Whether the elect lady is an individual or representative of a local church is a matter of debate, and one that I doubt may be determined before we get to heaven. I am of the opinion that when such is the case, we may learn lessons from each of the views. I tend to view her as a local church and her children as either those who are members, or else the churches and ministries that come out of her.

The lesson is that people who know the truth (who is Jesus Christ) love those things that are meaningful to the truth (who is Jesus Christ)

  • It’s not just the apostle
  • It’s not just the pastors
  • It’s not just the leaders of the church

Not only they but all who know the truth love that which is of and for the church.

2 John 1:13 (KJV) The Lady and Her Sister

2 John 1:13 (KJV)
The children of thy elect sister greet thee. Amen.

This little letter is addressed to “the elect lady and her children” and ends with a salutation from, “the children of thy elect sister.

I take it that this is a reference to a couple of churches. If that is the case:

  • They are local and separate
  • They are alike in fellowship
  • They walk in truth
  • They abide in the doctrine of Christ
  • They reject those that have a different doctrine
  • They are admonished to “look to yourselves” to preserve and protect a full reward[1]

Scripturally it is not enough for a church to have a reward. It is not enough to have a partial reward. We are to strive for a full reward.

[1] Barnes gives good counsel when he writes, “When error abounds in the world, our first duty is not to attack it… (but to) look to the citadel of our own souls and see that it is well guarded there.”
Perhaps this has been the weakness of much of modern Christianity. It has been on the offense and hasn’t prepared well for the defense of those back home. Consequently, we have won the souls of strangers (a good work) at the expense of the souls of our loved ones (a tragedy.)

2 John 1:11 (KJV) Whom Do We Support?

2 John 1:11 (KJV)
For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
Paul taught us that, when we support a preacher’s ministry, we become part of that ministry and share in its fruits.
Philippians 4:16-17
For even in Thessalonica ye sent once and again unto my necessity.
Not because I desire a gift: but I desire fruit that may abound to your account.
This passage indicates that the opposite is equally true; when we encourage, even in something as small as sending them on their way with our best wishes; in some way the heretic, the divider, the one who walks contrary to what the Bible teaches (especially in regard to Jesus) we becomes a partaker (participant) in their evil deed.
As some Christians put too little stock in the former, so too so many with the latter.
  • More support should be given to the faithful man of God
  • Much less encouragement should be given to the one who has departed from our ranks.

2 John 1:6 (KJV) The Reader Is Dependent

2 John 1:6 (KJV)
And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it.
Notice that this epistle is not self contained. The reader is dependent upon those things “ye have heard from the beginning” for proper understanding. The transgression of the doctrine of Christ, mentioned in verse nine, can only be properly informed by what we learn in other passages.
The Mormons have a doctrine of Christ
But it is different than a Christian’s.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses have a doctrine of Christ
But it is different than a Christian’s.
The Seventh Day Adventists have a doctrine of Christ
But it is different than a Christian’s.
Even the Muslims have a doctrine of Christ
And it is different than a Christian’s.
In every case to understand the doctrine of Christ we must refer to what has been previously taught. In order to get the doctrine right we must go back to what the Bible teaches and not a church denomination or other religion.
