Acts 13:34 (KJV) Sure Mercy

Acts 13:34 (KJV)
And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
It seems to me that David had a hand on mercy unlike any other man. David, the writer of the majority of the book of Psalms, speaks of mercy one hundred times and mercies another seventeen times. Psalm 118 is one of the most profound on the subject,
Psalms 118:1-29
O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: because his mercy endureth for ever.Let Israel now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy endureth for ever.Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy endureth for ever.I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, and set me in a large place. The LORD is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me.It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes. All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them. They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them. They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the LORD helped me.The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation. The voice of rejoicing and salvation is in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly. The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, and I will praise the LORD:This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner. This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes. This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.God is the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even unto the horns of the altar.Thou art my God, and I will praise thee: thou art my God, I will exalt thee.O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.
God’s mercies are sure. They are renewed every morning and they endure forever.

Job 23:10 (KJV) The Testimony of the Believer

Job 23:10 (KJV)
But he knoweth the way that I take: when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.
Behold the testimony of the believer.
Job began this discourse by saying that the groaning his friends witnessed was lighter than the stroke he had experienced. When a man is in great pain it may be that grace allows him to show it less than is reality but perhaps not hide it altogether. When we suffer it is reasonable to express it. We do not have to exaggerate it.
Job was in no position to meet God and plead for the suffering to stop. He had prayed, we are sure. There was little else he could do about his circumstances.
What he did do was trust.
  • He trusted God to know
  • He trusted God’s trial to be righteous and
  • He trusted that it would reap a benefit

Acts 11:17 (KJV) “Of The Circumcision”

Acts 11:17 (KJV)
Forasmuch then as God gave them the like gift as he did unto us, who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ; what was I, that I could withstand God?
Notice that Acts 11:2 identifies very early a particular mentality among some of the believers calling them, “they that were of the circumcision.” As far as I know all of these believers would have been Jewish by blood. Some of them hadn’t gotten over it. In effect they withstood God by insisting on maintaining their Jewishness.
Peter recounts the story of Cornelius to the believers in Jerusalem, including those who were still “of the circumcision,” and claims that, to do otherwise than renounce his Jewish expectations and embrace fellowship with these Gentiles, would be to withstand God.
Seems to me we have a fresh wave of those that are “of the circumcision” these days. Having been made free of such expectations, they that be of the circumcision whether Jew or Gentile by birth, chain themselves voluntarily to those same Old Testament rules that bound the Jews two thousand years ago.
Like Paul I marvel that they are so soon removed from the faith and the liberty that faith provides.

Acts 10:1 (KJV) God’s Word Is Effective

Acts 10:1 (KJV)
There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
The seat of Rome was in Italy. A person might think many if not all bands of Roman soldiers might be called Italian. But Rome was such a huge empire that the truth of it was most soldiers would have been from the provinces of Rome. Only a few could claim to be Italian.
Thus Cornelius is a level above a centurion, a position already of authority; he was a centurion of an elite band. This band of soldiers could claim the closest blood to Rome.
God’s Word is effective in the most remote places and among the most primitive of peoples. But it is equally powerful in the center of civilization and among those who have access to the great resources of this world.
We should not shrink from giving it to each.

Acts 9:13-14 (KJV) What God Might Be Doing

Acts 9:13-14 (KJV)
Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.
The great peace we have experienced in the United States leaves us nearly incapable of comprehending the terror that must have lived among these believers, except for their faith.
  • They had heard what is happening to Christians in other cities.
  • They knew of the persecution
  • They knew of the imprisonments
  • They knew of the deaths
  • They had heard that this evil was on its way to their town
It’s a dread impending upon them. Day after day they waited. Like the Jews of Esther’s day, who knew the decree and day of their extermination had been set, these believers of Damascus waited, helpless, against the threat they knew would soon be realized.
Who knows exactly how they spent their time?
  • I imagine they prayed
  • I imagine they worshipped
  • I imagine they encouraged one another in the Lord
Why they had not fled is unexplainable. Perhaps they had no means to flee. Perhaps they had nowhere to flee.
Then the day came that Saul arrived. But a miracle had happened. Saul had been converted. Suddenly. Unexpectedly. How could they have known that the Spirit of God had been at work, pricking his heart?
But He had and Saul was now saved.
We never know what God might be doing in the face of our worst dread.

Job 19:25-27 (KJV) Rest In This

Job 19:25-27 (KJV)
For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:Whom I shall see for myself, and mine eyes shall behold, and not another; though my reins be consumed within me.
This passage isn’t exactly the halfway point in the book of Job, but it is a pivotal one. The accusations of Job’s friends were technically correct. There was little argument Job wished to make against them. His only concern was that he knew this was not a judgment of his sin.
This brings to light a truth not often meditated upon; that God tests His children for their improvement. Like the athletic coach who may assign pushups or running as a form of discipline but also requires all his athletes to do significant amounts of the very same for their physical improvement, God chastens his child when necessary. Not all difficulty is chastening. It might be meant for their growth.
Job had few answers. He affirmed truth as he knew it, acknowledged the power of God in all things and then rested upon this promise, Job 19:25  For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:
May we all rest in the same.

Acts 7:25 (KJV) Simply Obeying God

Acts 7:25 (KJV)
For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.
Moses’ supposition was wrong. Fact is, his brethren never did understand. They never got the connection between Moses and God.
Oh, they did follow him into the wilderness, but that was as much out of necessity as faith. They hoped it was true, perhaps wanted it to be true. They wanted out of Egypt badly enough that Moses seemed like their best option. But every time a problem happened it was the same thing; blame it on Moses.
Nothing has changed today. People wrestle with the relationship of the man serving God (whether it is a Pastor, soul winner, or member of the church wishing to encourage and help a struggling believer). It is a mistake to suppose people understand. They just don’t.
But there is a huge difference between Moses attempting to deliver Israel by slaying the Egyptian and Moses forty years later demanding Pharaoh let Israel go. In the former, Moses was looking for Israel’s approbation and acceptance. In the later he was simply obeying God. The servant of the Lord needs to remember this difference. He does not need the understanding of the people nor their approval. He needs only to know he is obeying the Lord.

Job 14:12 (KJV) What God Believes

Job 14:12 (KJV)
So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
Even in his most miserable state, wishing he had never been born and complaining that life is full of trouble, Job could not help but hint at future resurrection.
Exactly what Job meant by what Job said is a matter of some discussion.
Benson writes,“That is, until the time of the general resurrection and restitution of all things, when these visible heavens shall pass away, and be no more, at least in the same form in which they are now.”
On the other hand Barnes records,“That is, never; for such is the fair interpretation of the passage, and this accords with its design. Job means to say, undoubtedly, that man would never appear again in the land of the living; that he would not spring up from the grave, as a sprout does from a fallen tree; and that when he dies, he goes away from the earth never to return. Whether he believed in a future state, or in the future resurrection, is another question, and one that cannot be determined from this passage.”
I would suggest that what Job believed is not the issue. He is merely the instrument God used to deliver God’s message for the time.
God certainly believes in the future resurrection.

Acts 5:38-40 (KJV) What If We Believed God?

Acts 5:38-40 (KJV)
And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
Wow! They came so close to the truth with the counsel of Gamaliel, “If it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it.
And they agreed.
Thing was, they were so convinced it was not of God that they agreed only because they were sure it would come to nought.
  • They proved they did not consider that it was of God because they beat and commanded the disciples not to speak in Jesus name.
  • They rejected this counsel completely when Stephen was stoned and Saul began his threats against the believers.
Imagine what might have been had they followed the counsel of Gamaliel to its conclusion. Imagine what might be if we would abandon our preconceived notions and believe God’s Word; first concerning salvation and then concerning the Christian life.

Job 10:2 (KJV) Take Heart

Job 10:2 (KJV)
I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.
Job displays, in this chapter, the raw emotions of a man faithful to God but in terrible pain.
  • Many is the time I have met with those whose sentiments were so similar to those of Job.
  • Many have been the times I have personally expressed these same sentiments to my God.
I do not believe we are to be faulted when, in times of affliction and pain, we say things of this nature. I do not believe God faults Job for saying them. Are these sentiments right? Many of them are not. In a clearer moment of thinking we hope we would react better. But these aren’t clear moments.
The purpose of such truthful passages is, at least in part, to help us process through our own pain. We will have friends like Job’s whose responses, though well intentioned, will not be helpful. God’s Word is helpful.
Allow Job to voice your heart.
  • Hear God’s answers
  • See God’s outcome
And take heart.

Acts 3:1 (KJV) What An Unlikely Pair

Acts 3:1 (KJV)
Now Peter and John went up together into the temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour.
What an unlikely pair, Peter and John. Though John and his brother James were known as the sons of Thunder, it does not appear to me that John is anywhere near like Peter was.
Peter was the spokesman type
Very often when you see the two together, Peter does the talking.
Peter was the oldest of the two
At least that is what I understand from my reading.
Peter was the more aggressive
When the two ran to the empty tomb John outran Peter but stopped short of entering the tomb. Peter stepped right in when he got there.
Both men were present when Jesus was tried but only Peter was pointed out as Jesus’ disciple.
John’s ministry wasn’t as aggressive as Peter’s might have been but it was longer running. John wrote more than twice as many of the New Testament books and was the “finalizer” of the Bible.
God uses different people differently. That doesn’t mean He won’t use them together.

Job 9:1-2 (KJV) How Should Man Be Just With God?

Job 9:1-2 (KJV)
Then Job answered and said,I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?
Job’s question is worthy of much reflection. The answer leads to genuine conversion and eternal salvation. We can be just with God only through the sacrifice God provided Himself. Faith alone in that sacrifice makes one just with God.
I would rather reflect, in this piece, on his affirmation of the discourse of Bildad. Some scholars even suggest it is an affirmation of what both Eliphaz and Bildad said. What these friends had spoken was not in error. Job agrees with them and further expounds upon their meditations. It seems to me that the problem is not with the truth of their words but:
Their purpose behind them
They wanted Job to admit some sin he had not committed but they were sure he must have done.
Their attitude in presenting them
They wanted to see Job humiliated. He had been one of the most powerful if not the most powerful man of his day. It is common for others to attack men like that if they are able.
Their conclusions after them
These men never resolve the subject. They represent truth about the holiness and justice of God and the sinful condition of man but they leave it there. The problem with that is that it leaves the impression that justice with God is earned by human effort. That is simply not the case.
A man is made just with God by grace through faith or he is not made just with God at all.

Acts 1:2 (KJV) As One, In A Church

Acts 1:2 (KJV)
Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
Though in every respect it may be said that the Holy Ghost was complicit with all that Jesus said, this is the first and only time that the Bible says Jesus spoke “through the Holy Ghost.” And this, in His resurrected body.
This takes us back to the promise of Jesus in John 16. It begins a transition of ministry directed by Christ to that which is empowered and led by the Holy Ghost. This transition finds its fulfillment in Pentecost.
The passage also reveals the cooperation between the persons of the Trinity. They are one. They each have their station and work but that work is in full compatibility with the others.
May we learn to function as one in a church as they are one in each other.

John 21:21-22 (KJV) How will he die?

John 21:21-22 (KJV)
Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
This is so typical of human nature. The conversation Peter had with Jesus was intense, pointed and convicting. What better way would there have been to change the subject than to talk about someone else? Peter turned to John and asked, “What about this man?”
In this case the question was “How will he die?” But it could have been all sorts of things;
  • How much money will he make?
  • Where will he have to live?
  • What kind of job will he have?
  • How bad will he suffer in life?
  • What sins will he need to confess?
Jesus’ response is fundamental Christianity, “What is that to thee? Follow thou me.”
Our concern for others ought to only be that we love them, attempt to minister to them and seek to see them saved. Other than that it’s between them and the Lord. All we need to do is follow the Lord.

To my readers:
