Acts 9:13-14 (KJV)
Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.

The great peace we have experienced in the United States leaves us nearly incapable of comprehending the terror that must have lived among these believers, except for their faith.
- They had heard what is happening to Christians in other cities.
- They knew of the persecution
- They knew of the imprisonments
- They knew of the deaths
- They had heard that this evil was on its way to their town
It’s a dread impending upon them. Day after day they waited. Like the Jews of Esther’s day, who knew the decree and day of their extermination had been set, these believers of Damascus waited, helpless, against the threat they knew would soon be realized.
Who knows exactly how they spent their time?
- I imagine they prayed
- I imagine they worshipped
- I imagine they encouraged one another in the Lord
Why they had not fled is unexplainable. Perhaps they had no means to flee. Perhaps they had nowhere to flee.
Then the day came that Saul arrived. But a miracle had happened. Saul had been converted. Suddenly. Unexpectedly. How could they have known that the Spirit of God had been at work, pricking his heart?
But He had and Saul was now saved.
We never know what God might be doing in the face of our worst dread.
