Numbers 3:36-37 (KJV) Temporary Duty

Numbers 3:36-37 (KJV)
And under the custody and charge of the sons of Merari shall be the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and the sockets thereof, and all the vessels thereof, and all that serveth thereto,
And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords.
It occurs to me that God knew all along He was giving these men only temporary assignments. The tabernacle only served the children of God for 400 years. The sons of Merari could not have known it at the time God’s plan for them was limited. The tabernacle would be replaced with the temple and their job would be no longer required. God had something else for them in the future.
The same is essentially true of whatever assignment we have today – it is temporary. Whatever part of the plan of God we have charge over today is but limited in time. Whether it is something as simple as a board that needs constant replacing or an ornament of gold, it will one day give way to that temple not made by hands, eternal in glory.
Take good care of the charge God has given you. But don’t get too concerned about how big or small it is. God’s plan for your eternal future may be vastly different than what you are doing today.

2 Timothy 2:16 (KJV) Words to Shun

2 Timothy 2:16 (KJV)
But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
It seems to me that many people get the study of verse 15 mixed up with the vain babblings of verse 16. Serious study of the Word of God carefully remains in the Bible. It rejects paths of thought that lead away from God’s Word and into those that are profane and vain.
I note the word, “shun.”
Most of my understanding of that word finds its roots in the Amish practice. I have known a few, of other religious groups, who were shunned, even by their families, for not following exactly the preaching of their church. To shun someone carries the idea of distancing without the possibility of reconciliation. This is exactly what we ought to do with conversations, concepts, and ideas that are not biblically rooted.
Profane
This word means heathenish or wicked. Philosophy and science falsely so called,  ideas that are worldly and reject the Bible would be included here.
Vain
This is useless and empty. Why debate, discuss and divide over ideas that have little or no value?

2 Timothy 1:7-8 (KJV) Shake Loose of Shame

2 Timothy 1:7-8 (KJV)
For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.
Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
There is an apparent correlation between fear and shame. Because God does not give us the spirit of fear, we do not have to be ashamed.
The concept of shame comes up three times in the chapter. Because God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind
  • Paul was not ashamed of what he suffered,
  • Onesiphorus was not ashamed of what Paul suffered and
  • Timothy had no reason to be ashamed of what he suffered
Shame then is a consequence of fear and fear a consequence of an unstable mind. To get hold of the power, love and mind of God is to shake loose of fear and the shame it causes.

1 Timothy 6:6 (KJV) Contentment Enough

1 Timothy 6:6 (KJV)
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
The context of this contentment goes back to,
1 Timothy 6:1-3
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed.
And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
And concludes in, 1 Timothy 6:9
But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.
  • Contentment even if under bondage.
  • Contentment even when your master isn’t godly.
  • Contentment even when suffering poverty.
Contentment enough to count your master worthy of all honor and not try to be free of him.

Leviticus 27:30 (KJV) The Lord’s Absolutely

Leviticus 27:30 (KJV)
And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’S: it is holy unto the LORD.
When I visit with God each day I use a Bible printed by Local Church Publishers as a tribute to the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible. This Bible is essentially a Scofield Reference Bible without the notes. It does include the divisions, titles and introductory notes of the Scofield Bible and the title given for Leviticus 27:26-33 is, “The three things which are the Lord’s absolutely.” Those three things are:
  • The firstlings of the beasts
  • Anything dedicated to the Lord and
  • All the tithe
These things cannot be redeemed. They cannot be purchased for personal use and, in those rare cases where they might be purchased, the price is higher than the value of the thing.
I am reminded that we must not make light of the things of God. Our culture these days still contains within it that which is Christian in name. We have churches, charities, and organizations of all sorts that claim a connection to the Christian faith. Unfortunately, many of these are wantonly unchristian in practice.
Has God removed His blessing because we have taken His possessions cheaply?

Leviticus 26:28 (KJV) I, Even I

Leviticus 26:28 (KJV)
Then I will walk contrary unto you also in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.
This chapter is one of blessings and curses. The Bible teaches there are blessings attached to obedience to the Word of God and alternately, curses for disobedience. A casual observation of life reveals that this is generally true. Obedience to the principles set forth in the Bible tends toward success whereas disobedience tends toward failure.
But more is involved in this chapter than simple tendencies.
No amount of Bible obedience can of itself make one man able to defeat one hundred. These promises are supernatural. By the way, the promises were all experienced by David and his mighty men. The hand of God enabled them to do that which is not natural.
The same is true of the curses. God assured them, “I, even I will chastise you.” Not natural tendencies but supernatural intervention.
Now, this is Old Testament, but it should not be dismissed. Though God deals differently with each of us and gives spiritual gifts as He wills, we can expect that God, who is the same yesterday, today and forever, still has His immediate hand upon His people. From time to time God goes beyond what is natural and blesses above what we could possibly expect. And from time to time His hand chastens more greatly than we could have thought.
It makes sense to know and obey the Bible.

1 Timothy 3:9 (KJV) To Have and to Hold

1 Timothy 3:9 (KJV)
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
The word hold means “to have to own, to possess.” It is where we get the expression, commonly used in wedding ceremonies, “to have and to hold.” To hold is to possess and thing and to see to its continued possession. Having laid hold of it, we intend to do those things necessary to maintain our hold.
A person cannot lose salvation because it is not his possession. Rather, to be saved is to be possessed of the Lord. Having laid hold of us, the Lord intends to keep hold. But there is the mystery of faith, the Gospel message.
  • To possess that message
  • To preserve its truth, and
  • To disseminate it to generations to come
this is a work committed by our Lord to the believer.
To hold this mystery and to see that others may hold it as we have is a work that must be done in a pure conscience. Any other sort of conscience will pervert and corrupt it.
To my readers:
First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments.

Leviticus 23:40 (KJV) A Modern Feast

Leviticus 23:40 (KJV)
And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days.
God gave to the Jews both holy days, such as the Sabbath and the Passover, and feasts, such as the feast of tabernacles. This feast was a yearly event when the Jews would make a tabernacle, a rough tent, and “camp” in it for a full week. It was to be a time of rejoicing and it was to remind them of the heritage of their forefathers who tabernacled in the wilderness between Israel and the Promise Land.
I doubt many of us would think of a modern camping trip as being in any way similar to the Jewish feast, but perhaps it can be in more ways than we imagined; especially if we choose to think of it in this way.
It is a time of rejoicing
Just getting outside, away from routine duties and pressures can be a celebration. Perhaps there are friends who join you.[1]  Sitting around a campfire in fellowship is pleasant to say the least.
It is a time of reflection
The Jews used the feast of tabernacles to remind them from where they had come. Getting out of our routine can help us remember things we might otherwise take for granted.
It is a time of thanksgiving
Whether we camp in a tent, a camper or some other sort of rough shelter, this serves to make us thankful for those things we have at home. Running water, a well-lit and warm house, storage, photos on the walls, etc.
Modern Christians would do well if they took a week every year to get away, breath in the fresh air, and reflect on what God has done for them.

[1]This would have certainly been true of the Jews who all practiced their feast at the same time.
