1 Timothy 3:9 (KJV) To Have and to Hold

1 Timothy 3:9 (KJV)
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
The word hold means “to have to own, to possess.” It is where we get the expression, commonly used in wedding ceremonies, “to have and to hold.” To hold is to possess and thing and to see to its continued possession. Having laid hold of it, we intend to do those things necessary to maintain our hold.
A person cannot lose salvation because it is not his possession. Rather, to be saved is to be possessed of the Lord. Having laid hold of us, the Lord intends to keep hold. But there is the mystery of faith, the Gospel message.
  • To possess that message
  • To preserve its truth, and
  • To disseminate it to generations to come
this is a work committed by our Lord to the believer.
To hold this mystery and to see that others may hold it as we have is a work that must be done in a pure conscience. Any other sort of conscience will pervert and corrupt it.
