Psalms 22:10 (KJV) When He Was on the Cross

Psalms 22:10 (KJV)

I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly.

That this Psalm contains prophecies of Christ is unmistakable, not only in the vivid depictions of the cross found in some verses herein, but also by the confirmation of New Testament Scripture.

Prophecy almost always has both a near and distant fulfillment. The near has to do with some person or event taking place at the time, while the distant has to do, oftentimes, with things we haven’t seen fulfilled even yet. The near serves as an earnest that the distant will, in God’s time, be fulfilled.

Having said that, I’d rather be cautious about trying to draw too much from the parts of this Psalm that don’t as readily point to Jesus Christ. They would surely have been in the heart and mind of David as he penned these words, but they might be a touch more difficult for us to see in exact correlation to our Saviour.

So, with some reluctance, but a good bit of interest, I offer this quote from Albert Barnes on this text:

“This, too, may have passed through the mind of the Redeemer on the cross. In those sad and desolate moments he may have recalled the scenes of his early life - the events which had occurred in regard to him in his early years; the poverty of his mother, the manger, the persecution by Herod, the flight into Egypt, the return, the safety which he then enjoyed from persecution in a distant part of the land of Palestine, in the obscure and unknown village of Nazareth.”

They say a dying man will often see his life “pass before his eyes” in those final moments. Imagine if this same thing occurred in Christ. Imagine Him on the cross, rehearsing in His mind the interactions between Himself and His Father, leading to His incarnation, His birth of a virgin mother, His deliverance from Herod, and the succeeding events—all determined before the foundation of the earth and leading to the very moment He took upon Himself the sins of the whole world.

Imagine that infinite mind meditating, in those moments of excruciating pain, not only upon Himself and the Father, perhaps not only upon the task He was completing, but upon the individuals for whom He had done it.

Imagine—when He was on the cross, you were on His mind.

Psalms 21:11 (KJV) We Have God

Psalms 21:11 (KJV)

For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.

I think it is John Gill who says that Psalms 20 and 21 go together. Psalm 20 is David’s prayer previous to a serious battle.

Though we do not know for certain, it is speculated that the enemy he faced was perhaps Syria and the Ammonites, as described in 2 Samuel 10. They were known to have had a great number of chariots.

This was a situation that was impossible to win on their own. They were outnumbered, and they were outclassed in weaponry.

David’s response to this threat was simple:

Psalms 20:7 (KJV)
“
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”

David assures his readers:

Psalms 20:8 (KJV)
“
They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright.”

That sounds good, doesn’t it?

But that is previous to the battle.

It’s easy to talk big things before any action is taken.

Now we come to Psalm 21 and, without citing the entire Psalm, we read:

Psalms 21:11 (KJV)
“
For they intended evil against thee: they imagined a mischievous device, which they are not able to perform.”

The enemy was not able to perform their evil intentions.

Now the application—we live in the “pre-battle” age. It’s obvious that things are being stirred up, and eventually they will come to a head. The enemy of God appears to have the advanced weaponry. They know it. We who are believers know it too.

But we have God.

Psalms 20:7 (KJV)
“
Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.”

We’ve read the end of THE BOOK. We know the promise of God.

We have in Psalms 20 and 21 a bit of a “down payment,” some earnest, if you will.

God’s people have been outnumbered and outclassed before. The name of the LORD got them through.

He’ll do the same for us.
