Deuteronomy 34:6 (KJV) The Day God Dug a Grave

Deuteronomy 34:6 (KJV)

And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

I am reminded of Jude 1:9 (KJV):
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown writes concerning this:

“Satan, as having the power of death, opposed the raising of it again, on the ground of Moses’ sin at Meribah, and his murder of the Egyptian. That Moses’ body was raised appears from his presence with Elijah and Jesus (who were in the body) at the Transfiguration: the sample and earnest of the coming resurrection kingdom, to be ushered in by Michael’s standing up for God’s people. Thus in each dispensation a sample and pledge of the future resurrection was given: Enoch in the patriarchal dispensation, Moses in the Levitical, Elijah in the prophetical.”

The fact that we don’t know the source of Jude’s passage in no way discredits the passage. It is God-breathed, inspired, infallible, inerrant. Oh, foolish man—to think we must possess every source quoted, or else the quote is invalid!

My interest today is in the phrase, “He buried him.” Gill writes:

“Aben Ezra says he buried himself, going into a cave on the top of the mount, where he expired, and so where he died his grave was; but though he died on the mount, he was buried in a valley. Jarchi and other Jewish writers say the Lord buried him; it may be by the ministry of angels. An Arabic writer says he was buried by angels.”

Since Moses went (we suppose) alone to die on Mount Nebo, there are only two possible explanations for who buried him:

  1. He buried himself.
It is conceivable that he went into a cave to die, as Aben Ezra suggests.
  2. God buried him.
Either personally or through the command of angels.

I believe it was the latter—an act of tenderness and personal care from our Almighty Father.

Ephesians 3:18–19 (KJV):
May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;
And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

The Day God Dug a Grave: When Heaven Claimed Moses’ Body

🌄 God Buried Moses — Here’s Why That Matters!

Did you know the Bible says God Himself buried Moses? (Deuteronomy 34:6) That single verse reminds us of His personal care—even in death. It also answers one of the biggest questions skeptics ask: Can Scripture be true even when its sources can’t be traced?

Jude 1:9 proves it absolutely can. God gave us truth beyond human verification, showing that faith rests on revelation, not research.

Deuteronomy 33:3 (KJV) Safe, Seated, and Spoken To

Deuteronomy 33:3 (KJV)

Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.

We are told from the outset that this is a blessing from Moses upon the children of Israel, and that it is a blessing given just before his death.

Moses had an advantage not all of us—or even many of us—have; he knew when he would die. In that moment, before ascending the mountain to meet God alone, he gave this last, heartfelt blessing upon the people.

  • This wasn’t meaningless sentiment.
  • This wasn’t mere wishful prose.
  • This wasn’t just religious expression.

Moses had walked with God, followed God, spoken with God, and spoken God’s Word for forty years. This was not idle emotion—it was prophetic, inspired, infallible, precious, and perfect—the very Word of God.

In blessing the children of Israel, Moses said,

Yea, he loved the people; all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words.

To break it down:

  • God loves His people.
  • God holds His people.
  • God seats His people.
  • God speaks to His people.

This is true of Israel in the wilderness, Israel in the land, and of true Israel today—those who are the children of God by faith in His Son, Jesus Christ.

Deuteronomy 31:2-3 (KJV) He Led Well Because God Did

Deuteronomy 31:2-3 (KJV)

And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

The LORD thy God, he will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.

We all know Moses was not permitted to enter the land because, in his anger, he disobeyed the Lord and smote the rock instead of speaking to it.

Moses here gives a second reason—he was old and could no longer get around as he once did.

But I see in verse three what is, in my understanding, the root reason. Moses didn’t go over Jordan with them—but God did.

I am happy to acknowledge that God gave them a leader after Moses, Joshua. But Joshua would have been new in the job—proven as Moses’ servant, but not yet as the man out front. During this very critical juncture in the life of Israel, they needed to know that God was their leader.

  • Not Moses.
  • Not even Joshua.

God went over before them.

I am thankful that God places good leaders in our lives. I’ve known some pastors whose impact and influence have been amazing, inspiring, almost flawless. It would not be difficult to come to the place where we were unwittingly following them rather than the Lord.

One of those men passed away just this week. Pastor Dave Brown has influenced my life for the better part of forty years. In my earliest days of ministry, I watched him in awe. His father took me under his wing, so to speak, and encouraged me. But when he died, it was as if Dave Brown picked up the mantle and did double his dad.

He molded me. He led me into advanced positions of leadership. He introduced me to people of influence I would otherwise not have known. He stood beside me in spiritual combat, even shielding me from the enemy’s darts.

But he would have always wanted me to know—it was God who went before me.

Today, like no other day in the last forty years, I am reminded of that. We love people. We cherish those men God has used to build us. But we trust in God alone.

I will see you in glory, my friend.

Deuteronomy 30:4 (KJV) Lost?

Deuteronomy 30:4 (KJV)

If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:

I am surprised at the use of the word heaven in this passage. I am aware of three areas biblically called heaven:

  • The air we breathe—our atmosphere.
  • The stars of space—heavenly bodies.
  • The home of God—the third heaven.

But this text implies a fourth place—one less hospitable. One from which God promises to gather Israel.

The Hebrew word means desolate, wind, breath. Some translations wrongly, but understandably, render the passage “under heaven.” We just like to keep our paradigms alive and protected. Interestingly, none of the old commentaries have any trouble with this. They accept that the text means the farthest, most distant places.

It’s a place none of us want to be—away from God, away from home, away from all we have come to love, away from our purpose.

But notice—it’s not too far that God can’t gather us back.

No matter where one finds himself, if we still have breath, God can gather us and bring us back.

  • That’s the blessing of God.
  • That’s the promise of God.
  • That’s the power of God.

And it’s the ultimate purpose of God—to bring us back to Him; to gather us from a desolate place, far from Him, to another place, far from sin and death.
