If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee:
I am surprised at the use of the word heaven in this passage. I am aware of three areas biblically called heaven:
- The air we breathe—our atmosphere.
- The stars of space—heavenly bodies.
- The home of God—the third heaven.
But this text implies a fourth place—one less hospitable. One from which God promises to gather Israel.
The Hebrew word means desolate, wind, breath. Some translations wrongly, but understandably, render the passage “under heaven.” We just like to keep our paradigms alive and protected. Interestingly, none of the old commentaries have any trouble with this. They accept that the text means the farthest, most distant places.
It’s a place none of us want to be—away from God, away from home, away from all we have come to love, away from our purpose.
But notice—it’s not too far that God can’t gather us back.
No matter where one finds himself, if we still have breath, God can gather us and bring us back.
- That’s the blessing of God.
- That’s the promise of God.
- That’s the power of God.
And it’s the ultimate purpose of God—to bring us back to Him; to gather us from a desolate place, far from Him, to another place, far from sin and death.
