Joshua 24:27 (KJV) The Stone That Still Listens

Joshua 24:27 (KJV)

And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness unto us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness unto you, lest ye deny your God.

Way back in probably 1985 or 1986, I had the opportunity to attend a presentation conducted by, I believe, Dean Ortner of Moody Bible Institute called “Sermons from Science.” The one I attended was about recordings. Ortner demonstrated multiple lessons on the subject of recording. He explained the science behind records, 8-tracks, and cassettes—which were very new back then. He used a microphone capable of recording a conversation whispered a mile away. He illustrated the science behind telephones, headphones, television, and many other astounding things.

One of the points of all this science was to demonstrate the scientific fact behind what Joshua says in this passage: magnetism, vibration, light reflection. This inanimate rock Joshua pointed to was more than just a lump marking the location of their covenant—it was quite literally capable of recording the event. You and I might not possess the technology to retrieve that data, but that is no proof the data doesn’t exist.

The point is that our covenants with one another and our vows before the Lord are more permanent than we can imagine. Jesus said, “Let your yea be yea, and your nay, nay.”

Be good for your word.
Before men, of course.
Before God, is not an option.

The Stone That Still Listens: Science Proves the Bible Right Again

Do you believe the Bible and science can agree? 🌍📖
Dean Ortner’s Sermons from Science once showed how creation itself records God’s truth—just like Joshua’s stone that “heard all the words of the LORD.” Every word you speak leaves a trace, and every promise matters to God.

Joshua 17:17 (KJV) Greatness Starts Where Pride Ends

Joshua 17:17 (KJV)

And Joshua spake unto the house of Joseph, even to Ephraim and to Manasseh, saying, Thou art a great people, and hast great power: thou shalt not have one lot only:

The play on words in this passage has always grabbed my attention. I’ve tried to preach it a few times and written on it often in my devotions. Manasseh knew they were a “great people,” but they were thinking strictly in terms of population. Their tribe was larger than many others, so their request was simple: “Give us more land—there are too many of us for this space.”

Joshua takes their statement and subtly turns it into a challenge: “If thou be a great people…” He shifts the focus. The real issue isn’t how many people stand in a group—what matters is the character of the people. (Churches could learn from this. A crowded auditorium means very little if faith is weak. Numbers aren’t the measure—spiritual strength is.)

Joshua agrees to their request for more territory, but the land they wanted required faith to conquer. Immediately, Manasseh shrinks back. “We can’t take that land. The Canaanites have iron chariots.” Suddenly their so-called greatness collapses. And honestly, that kind of humbling is sometimes necessary.

It’s right there—after their confidence in the flesh is broken—that Joshua can say, “Thou art a great people, and hast great power.” True greatness never rests in human strength. Greatness comes from God working in those who walk humbly.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

Greatness Starts Where Pride Ends: The Measure of a People

📖 Are you measuring greatness the way God does?

So many people chase numbers—crowds, followers, results—but Joshua reminds us that true greatness comes from faith, courage, and humility before the Lord.

Joshua 14:13 (KJV) Faith Still Climbs the Hard Mountains

Joshua 14:13 (KJV)

And Joshua blessed him, and gave unto Caleb the son of Jephunneh Hebron for an inheritance.

Caleb sighted this mountain during the mission of the twelve spies. The only quality he mentions in this text is that it was the land of the Anakims, and that it was the home of Arba, a great man among the Anakims.

Historically, Caleb would have known that Abraham and Sarah were buried there. It’s the only piece of property Abraham actually owned in his lifetime. Isaac was buried there. The place had such value that Jacob requested, when he died, to be carried from Egypt back there to be buried.

The Promised Land was flowing with milk and honey. There was wealth and treasure to be gained there. But Hebron would be no easy prize. Joshua could give Caleb the mountain, but he would then have to win it from the giants.

God promises to preserve His Word, His church, and even the souls of the saved. These are gifts—rightfully ours, purchased by the blood of Christ. They are treasures, rich in heritage and full of meaning. But neither are they easy prizes. Giants abound on the mountains of biblical faith, each one eager for a chance to rip away from us what God alone has given.

They can’t win.
Faith knows that.

But faith doesn’t soften the blows of the giants’ weapons. It doesn’t minimize the significance of the battle. Faith can keep us in the fight, but it doesn’t make the enemy smaller or weaker.

The battle for a pure Bible, the battle for a true church, and the battle for a sanctified soul are promised victories—but they are hard-fought.

Praise God for the Calebs in every generation who are willing to take on the giants and take Mount Hebron once again.

Faith Still Climbs the Hard Mountains: Where Are the Calebs of Our Generation?

✨ Are you facing battles that feel too big to win? Caleb stood before Mount Hebron—filled with giants—and said, “Give me this mountain.” His faith reminds us that God’s promises are worth fighting for! 💪

The same God who gave Caleb victory can give you strength to stand for truth, defend the Word of God, and live a sanctified life even when the world opposes it. 🏔️✝️

Joshua 11:6 (KJV) Infallible, In Fact

Joshua 11:6 (KJV)

And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

Years ago, I had the pleasure of some fellowship and ministry with a pastor from San Diego, California, named Thomas Cassidy. I admired him for several reasons. He had been an Air Force fighter pilot, shot down twice in Vietnam. I have enormous respect for those pilots—especially those who sacrificed so much.

Pastor Cassidy lived in constant pain due to his injuries. I once told him that I had received an appointment to the Air Force Academy, but I “chickened out” and never followed through. He told me I had made the better choice—surrendering to the Lord’s service.

I respected Brother Cassidy most for his ministry and his stand on the inerrancy of the King James Version of the Bible. In a discussion with a group of pastors about whether the KJV had been edited over the years, Brother Cassidy made this profound statement—one I’m sure I still don’t fully grasp:

“The King James Version is infallible, in fact.”

Our text is a good example. My Bible says “thou shalt hough their horses.” Other printings of the King James use the word “hock.” “Hough” is the correct and older term; it means to cut the hamstring. “Hock” is a newer form with the same meaning. I’m picky enough to stay with the older word.

But I found an explanation that might help clarify:

  • The doctrine is unaffected by whether “hough” or “hock” is used—both convey the same command and meaning: disabling the horses so Israel would trust God, not military might.
  • The word “hough” appears in the 1611 and 1769 printings.
  • Printing houses may differ in minor spellings or archaic word forms—these are editorial, not doctrinal, choices. (Influenced, I am sure, by the translators of the modern versions.)

Editorial decisions do not change the Word of God because they are not authoritative.
The King James Version is infallible, in fact.

Infallible, In Fact: Trust the Text, Not the Typesetters

Are you searching for solid, Bible-based answers in a world full of confusion? The King James Bible still stands as infallible, in fact. God’s Word hasn’t changed — and it never will.

Joshua 10:42 (KJV) Overwhelmed?

Joshua 10:42 (KJV)

And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.

In a conversation with my oldest son a few days ago, he made this statement:
“Storms don’t come in one drop.”

It might be simple to wipe away a single drop of water—but that single drop also won’t water the fields. Trials don’t usually come in small, manageable steps. They hit hard, fast, and often all at once. They feel like they might overwhelm and wash us away. Yet, it’s often in the aftermath of those very trials that we find some of our greatest advancements.

Joshua faced a similar situation. After Israel made a treaty with the Gibeonites, Adonizedek gathered ten other kings to destroy both Gibeon and Israel. Imagine the tension in Israel’s camp! They had promised to defend Gibeon in battle, and now, on their divine mission from God, they were forced to divert to keep their word.

But God was with them—“The LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.”
What looked like disaster turned out to be a giant step forward. Joshua took all those kings and their lands “at one time.”

  • First battles like Jericho.
  • Small battles like Ai.
  • Overwhelming battles like this one.

The key to every victory remains the same:

Be sure the LORD God of Israel fights for you—or else, don’t fight at all!

#GodFightsForYou #VictoryInTheBattle #FaithThroughTheStorm #WhenGodStepsIn #TrustHisTiming

Overwhelmed? Don’t Fight Alone—Let God Bring Victory

When life feels like one storm after another, remember—God still fights for His people. 🌧⚔️

Joshua faced overwhelming battles, yet “the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel” (Joshua 10:42).
The same God who brought victory then still fights for His children today.
