Ecclesiastes 11:5 (KJV) The Spiritual Mysteries Science Can’t Define

Ecclesiastes 11:5 (KJV)

As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all.

One of the things that frustrates those who claim they do not believe in God is all that they do not know.

They don’t know the way of the spirit.
A man just recently chided me that science can’t prove there even is a soul and spirit in man. It must frustrate them because while they can’t prove it, they must innately know it is.

They do not know how the bones grow in the womb.
I know science has learned a great deal about the mechanics of conception, DNA, cell division, and that sort of thing. But they have no clue how all this makes life. Life is the elusive thing.

They do not know the works of God.
This frustrates them more than anything else. How can God exist if they cannot prove Him? How can One greater than themselves be true?

I come back to believing in the teachings of the Bible. It is in us all to know that God is. The world, the flesh, and the devil work hard to cover up, excuse, and explain away what we know by faith to be true, but it serves no good.

  • It frustrates the soul of the lost man and, in the end
  • He will still stand before God one day to give account

Ecclesiastes 10:7 (KJV) Leaders on Foot

Ecclesiastes 10:7 (KJV)

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

I see a couple of life observations in this verse.

True leaders lead on ground level.
They don’t believe themselves to be better than the people they lead. But those who ought not lead often take far too much pleasure in the “perks” of position.

Our world is such a backward and corrupt place that those who ought to lead are too often relegated to lower places while those who cannot lead are elevated.
I think it happened in the 2020 elections. A man who can lead but is a friend to the working class got “cancelled” while a man who has a proven record of poor leadership and whose mental competence is at the very least questionable was placed into office. Most of us, I think even his supporters, know it had to have been a corrupted process that brought this about.

This world is not as God made it.
It is defiled through sin. The answer to our world’s crisis is not through government or even good leaders. The answer is Jesus Christ. Solid, sound and several churches must be founded. The Word of God must go forth. Souls must be saved, baptized, and instructed in the Word. Of course, godly people must vote, and wise people must offer themselves for public service, but the focus has to turn to God and to what concerns Him.

In the end, the resolution is in the end of days. Live, love, and look for that day.

Ecclesiastes 9:16 (KJV) Heroic Acts or Memorable Deeds?

Ecclesiastes 9:16 (KJV)

Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.

The battle between the flesh and the Spirit (Romans 6, Galatians 5) is often a battle between what we experience in the world and what we learn in the Word. These two are at odd and often polar opposites.

Ecclesiastes 9:13-18 constitute a full paragraph addressing this very struggle.

  • Wisdom is better … but
  • His wisdom is despised

The illustration is given of a besieged city saved through the wisdom of a poor but wise man. Thank God for him. But in the end, he was not remembered,

  • For his wisdom
  • For his part in saving the city
  • Only perhaps for his poverty

But he still saved the city.

Which is better, to do something heroic or to do something memorable?

It is a struggle in the soul to do the better thing rather than the memorable thing or the rewarded thing.

The conclusion of the book of Ecclesiastes is, I believe, do the better thing.

Ecclesiastes 8:2 (KJV) The Truth about Church and State

Ecclesiastes 8:2 (KJV)

I counsel thee to keep the king’s commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.

I had a conversation with a young man, a union apprentice carpenter about the subject of separation of church and state. The union people, advising him in his career, tell him that Christian people[1] should not be involved in politics or hold political office. It’s based on the unfounded and totally false idea that people who aren’t Christians hold no “faith based” beliefs. It’s not true. Everyone has a belief system. One believes scientific evolution explains the existence of all things, another believes God explains the existence of all things. One’s explanation leads him to believe man is only accountable to himself, the other leads him to believe he will give an account to God. Neither position is provable. Both positions use much the same evidence to support their faith.

Enough of that. Here’s the thing. As a Baptist I am dead set against the marriage of church and state. Separation of church and state may not be in the Constitution of the United States, but it is certainly and biblical position, supported by more than two thousand years illustrating the danger of the union of the two.

  • It is bad when government controls churches.
  • It is bad when churches control government.

But it is not bad when a man of faith serves in government. Biblically, it is best when a person of faith serves in government.

We need people in government who will obey the laws of the land. We need them especially to do so, understanding they will one day give an account of that obedience before the Lord.

Ecclesiastes 4:13 (KJV) Never Too Old to Learn

Ecclesiastes 4:13 (KJV)

Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

The wisdom in the Ecclesiastes is sometimes challenging for us to gather because the preacher, writing of past experiences, often bounces from the worldly perspective he once had to the godlier perspective he was writing from.

Two thoughts.

I don’t condemn this because I frequently write (or say) a thing intended to be sarcastic or rhetorical, not to be taken literally, but I struggle with how to do so effectively. This is God’s Word and God doesn’t struggle to communicate as I do. The struggle is within me to understand.

Secondly, such writing is good for us as it requires we put some thought and effort into our study. The Bible is not a checklist of do’s and don’ts for righteousness. The Bible is a means of meeting up with God. It can’t be done too casually.

Here’s a simple but quick lesson from the wisdom of the “preacher.” Never allow yourself to become,

  • Too powerful
  • Too proud
  • Too sure
  • Too mature
  • Too stubborn

to be admonished.

They may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but we are not dogs. Never come to the place where you can’t be enlightened, taught, or warned.

Ecclesiastes 3:15 (KJV) Time, Eternity, and God’s Unchanging Presence

Ecclesiastes 3:15 (KJV)

That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth that which is past.

A discourse on time.

It’s important to remember that, though the preacher describes a period of rebellion against God, he writes after he has repented and gotten right with God. Interjected among his ventures into vanity are these portions that bring us back to reality.

Chapter three is all about time.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (KJV)
To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;
A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:17 (KJV)
I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

Vs 15 summarizes perhaps the most challenging of all concepts regarding the Eternal and time: that God has no time.

That which has been is now
There is no past for God. All that ever has happened is happening in the presence and mind of God. Imagine then God forgiving your sins. In His reality the sin He forgives is being committed now. When Christ died on the Cross, He gave His life for the sin Adam was committing in God’s presence, at that moment.

That which is to be hath already been
We speak of sins past, present and future, but we are mistaken. All of them are now present, real time in God’s world.

God requireth that which is past
It’s due date is current. It’s not past due because it’s now. But it is due now.
2 Corinthians 6:2 (KJV)
(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

Ecclesiastes 2:15 (KJV) Squandered Talents

Ecclesiastes 2:15 (KJV)

Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.

Solomon’s reflection in verse nine is profound. Despite his sin, he retained the wisdom he had sought from God. The Lord did not withdraw it from him. However, he realized that this wisdom was meaningless unless it was centered on the Lord, a concept we’ll resolve at the end of the book of Ecclesiastes.

The lesson for believers is clear: the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.[1] God never takes them from us, even when we find ourselves amid sin and rebellion. However, these gifts go to waste and lose their purpose if we are not walking in close fellowship with the Lord.

It’s disheartening to possess God-given talents and be unable to use them for His work. This holds true in various life situations, such as when a person called to be a pastor is disqualified due to divorce.[2] The feeling of vanity, frustration, and the constant agony of possessing a gift from God but not being able to employ it for His purpose is deeply challenging.

This situation reminds me of Proverbs 31:3, emphasizing the urgency for young men and women to guard themselves both from each other and for God’s purposes. As we near the end of our earthly lives, we come to understand the immense value of reserving what belongs to God solely for His service.

Squandered Talents: Guarding What’s God’s

[1] Romans 11:29 (KJV)
For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

[2] This is a painful, and controversial but obvious illustration of a principle that can apply to any number of areas. For instance, in some cases a person’s poor use of finances, or lack of health may also disqualify them from exercising spiritual gifts that are intended for ministry.
