Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man’s wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
The battle between the flesh and the Spirit (Romans 6, Galatians 5) is often a battle between what we experience in the world and what we learn in the Word. These two are at odd and often polar opposites.
Ecclesiastes 9:13-18 constitute a full paragraph addressing this very struggle.
- Wisdom is better … but
- His wisdom is despised
The illustration is given of a besieged city saved through the wisdom of a poor but wise man. Thank God for him. But in the end, he was not remembered,
- For his wisdom
- For his part in saving the city
- Only perhaps for his poverty
But he still saved the city.
Which is better, to do something heroic or to do something memorable?
It is a struggle in the soul to do the better thing rather than the memorable thing or the rewarded thing.
The conclusion of the book of Ecclesiastes is, I believe, do the better thing.
