I counsel thee to keep the king’s commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God.
I had a conversation with a young man, a union apprentice carpenter about the subject of separation of church and state. The union people, advising him in his career, tell him that Christian people[1] should not be involved in politics or hold political office. It’s based on the unfounded and totally false idea that people who aren’t Christians hold no “faith based” beliefs. It’s not true. Everyone has a belief system. One believes scientific evolution explains the existence of all things, another believes God explains the existence of all things. One’s explanation leads him to believe man is only accountable to himself, the other leads him to believe he will give an account to God. Neither position is provable. Both positions use much the same evidence to support their faith.
Enough of that. Here’s the thing. As a Baptist I am dead set against the marriage of church and state. Separation of church and state may not be in the Constitution of the United States, but it is certainly and biblical position, supported by more than two thousand years illustrating the danger of the union of the two.
- It is bad when government controls churches.
- It is bad when churches control government.
But it is not bad when a man of faith serves in government. Biblically, it is best when a person of faith serves in government.
We need people in government who will obey the laws of the land. We need them especially to do so, understanding they will one day give an account of that obedience before the Lord.
