Job 2:13 (KJV)
So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.
The Bible says of Job three times that he “was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.” The Bible introduces him this way. Then God personally confirms it in Job 1:8 and again in Job 2:3. Job was a man of faith, a man of prayer, a man of worship, and a man wholly submitted to the Lord.
Yet he was capable of profound grief.
The circumstances that began Job's suffering were not of his own making. God Himself declared that Satan had moved Him against Job "to destroy him without cause." Job had done nothing to deserve the losses that overwhelmed him. By this point, he had lost his wealth, his children, and his health. His grief was so overwhelming that his friends sat silently with him for seven days because they saw "that his grief was very great.”
There is a form of Christianity today—the health, wealth, and prosperity message—that teaches genuine faith is measured by continual joy, constant victory, and an unbroken spirit of triumph. While we often associate that teaching with the Charismatic movement, traces of it can be found throughout modern Christianity, especially in America.
Job proves otherwise.
The strongest faith is not demonstrated by pretending pain does not exist. It is demonstrated by trusting God when the pain is almost beyond bearing.
The Christian life is not a denial of sorrow. We are strangers and pilgrims in a world broken by sin. We rejoice in Christ, but we still bury loved ones. We still endure trials. We still shed tears.
Once in a while, we're going to get homesick.
