Ecclesiastes 4:13 (KJV)

Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.

The wisdom in the Ecclesiastes is sometimes challenging for us to gather because the preacher, writing of past experiences, often bounces from the worldly perspective he once had to the godlier perspective he was writing from.

Two thoughts.

I don’t condemn this because I frequently write (or say) a thing intended to be sarcastic or rhetorical, not to be taken literally, but I struggle with how to do so effectively. This is God’s Word and God doesn’t struggle to communicate as I do. The struggle is within me to understand.

Secondly, such writing is good for us as it requires we put some thought and effort into our study. The Bible is not a checklist of do’s and don’ts for righteousness. The Bible is a means of meeting up with God. It can’t be done too casually.

Here’s a simple but quick lesson from the wisdom of the “preacher.” Never allow yourself to become,

• Too powerful
• Too proud
• Too sure
• Too mature
• Too stubborn

to be admonished. 

They may not be able to teach an old dog new tricks, but we are not dogs. Never come to the place where you can’t be enlightened, taught, or warned.
