Joshua 10:42 (KJV)
And all these kings and their land did Joshua take at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.
In a conversation with my oldest son a few days ago, he made this statement:
“Storms don’t come in one drop.”
It might be simple to wipe away a single drop of water—but that single drop also won’t water the fields. Trials don’t usually come in small, manageable steps. They hit hard, fast, and often all at once. They feel like they might overwhelm and wash us away. Yet, it’s often in the aftermath of those very trials that we find some of our greatest advancements.
Joshua faced a similar situation. After Israel made a treaty with the Gibeonites, Adonizedek gathered ten other kings to destroy both Gibeon and Israel. Imagine the tension in Israel’s camp! They had promised to defend Gibeon in battle, and now, on their divine mission from God, they were forced to divert to keep their word.
But God was with them—“The LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.”
What looked like disaster turned out to be a giant step forward. Joshua took all those kings and their lands “at one time.”
- First battles like Jericho.
- Small battles like Ai.
- Overwhelming battles like this one.
The key to every victory remains the same:
Be sure the LORD God of Israel fights for you—or else, don’t fight at all!

Joshua faced overwhelming battles, yet “the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel” (Joshua 10:42).
The same God who brought victory then still fights for His children today.
