And the LORD said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.
Years ago, I had the pleasure of some fellowship and ministry with a pastor from San Diego, California, named Thomas Cassidy. I admired him for several reasons. He had been an Air Force fighter pilot, shot down twice in Vietnam. I have enormous respect for those pilots—especially those who sacrificed so much.
Pastor Cassidy lived in constant pain due to his injuries. I once told him that I had received an appointment to the Air Force Academy, but I “chickened out” and never followed through. He told me I had made the better choice—surrendering to the Lord’s service.
I respected Brother Cassidy most for his ministry and his stand on the inerrancy of the King James Version of the Bible. In a discussion with a group of pastors about whether the KJV had been edited over the years, Brother Cassidy made this profound statement—one I’m sure I still don’t fully grasp:
“The King James Version is infallible, in fact.”
Our text is a good example. My Bible says “thou shalt hough their horses.” Other printings of the King James use the word “hock.” “Hough” is the correct and older term; it means to cut the hamstring. “Hock” is a newer form with the same meaning. I’m picky enough to stay with the older word.
But I found an explanation that might help clarify:
- The doctrine is unaffected by whether “hough” or “hock” is used—both convey the same command and meaning: disabling the horses so Israel would trust God, not military might.
- The word “hough” appears in the 1611 and 1769 printings.
- Printing houses may differ in minor spellings or archaic word forms—these are editorial, not doctrinal, choices. (Influenced, I am sure, by the translators of the modern versions.)
Editorial decisions do not change the Word of God because they are not authoritative.
The King James Version is infallible, in fact.
