And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart.
When I was very young in the ministry, it was common to attend a pastors’ meeting and, rather than stay in a motel, accept the hospitality of a member of the church hosting the meeting.
Oftentimes this involved meeting up with a fellow pastor somewhere along the way so we could share a ride—at least part of the journey. We’d arrive at the meeting where, after the first evening’s service, the host pastor would announce, “If anyone needs a place to stay, come see me.” He’d then introduce me and the preacher I had traveled with to a family, and we’d go to their home for the night.
We had no idea where we’d be staying until the end of the first service. We had no idea what the accommodations would be until we arrived at their home. It was truly a step of faith—especially since the churches we visited were often small congregations of maybe thirty to fifty souls.
Times have changed. While my wife and I recently stayed in a church member’s home—people we had never met before—I can’t recall the last time a host pastor offered housing to anyone needing a place after the service.
The disciples were instructed to do this—travel without money, food, or provisions—in a time when the culture valued hospitality, yet had not embraced them as ministers of God.
I’m not advocating for irresponsibility, but I do believe Christians would be more effective in this world if we stepped out more often in faith. Neither am I suggesting we should call it “God’s provision” if an unbeliever merely takes pity on us, or if we manipulate others into meeting our needs. That brings reproach upon the gospel rather than glory to God.
But a people who learn to truly trust God, who are content with whatever He provides, and who sincerely speak the truth of His Word—those are the people who change eternity.

When Jesus sent His disciples out with nothing but faith, He taught them that God always provides (Luke 9:4). In a world where comfort and planning often replace faith, maybe it’s time we learn again to walk by trust, not by sight.
