And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again.
Not every home welcomes the peace of God the same way. Jesus knew that—and so do those who’ve served long in ministry.
Through the years, I’ve seen how true this verse is. The presence of the preacher, the reading of God’s Word, and the words of prayer often bring immense comfort—but only to those who know the Son of God.
I’ve been called to the bedside of the sick and dying many times. When that person was a believer, my visit was welcomed, appreciated, and helpful. But when the person was not a believer, or hardened toward the gospel, the visit sometimes had the opposite effect.
Often a believing loved one would ask me to pray that this would be the moment of salvation. Sometimes it was. Other times, it wasn’t.
It takes time to come to peace with that truth—but it’s as biblical as it can be. The outcome of those visits never depended on whether “God was with me,” how prayed up I was, or how easily I connected with the family. We’re so prone to turn ministry into something man-centered—as if it’s a skill we can master.
But the real difference, in Jesus’ day and in ours, is always this: “If the Son of Peace be there.”
It’s never our job to make sure He is. Our calling is simply to obey the Savior’s words and “Go your ways.” (v. 3)
When you go in Christ’s name, do you trust Him with the outcome?
