Acts 5:38-40 (KJV)
And now I say unto you, Refrain from these men, and let them alone: for if this counsel or this work be of men, it will come to nought:But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it; lest haply ye be found even to fight against God.And to him they agreed: and when they had called the apostles, and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

Wow! They came so close to the truth with the counsel of Gamaliel, “If it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it.“

And they agreed.

Thing was, they were so convinced it was not of God that they agreed only because they were sure it would come to nought.

• They proved they did not consider that it was of God because they beat and commanded the disciples not to speak in Jesus name. 
• They rejected this counsel completely when Stephen was stoned and Saul began his threats against the believers. 

Imagine what might have been had they followed the counsel of Gamaliel to its conclusion. Imagine what might be if we would abandon our preconceived notions and believe God’s Word; first concerning salvation and then concerning the Christian life.
