Titus 1:14 (KJV) Set Free—Stay Free in Christ

Titus 1:14 (KJV)

Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.

I  suppose no one likes to be rebuked—let alone to be rebuked sharply. However, when done in the right spirit and for the right purpose, sometimes such a rebuke is necessary. The Word of God says here in Titus 1:14 that it is necessary for two reasons:

  • That they do not give heed to Jewish fables
  • That they do not give heed to “commandments of men, that turn from the truth

While I realize that the conjunction and can connect and combine the two—so that the Jewish fables and the commandments of men could be seen as one and the same. I suggest that is not the case in this context.

The Apostle had dealt with unbelieving Jews—those who had rejected Christ. They had, or rather their peers in Jerusalem had, condemned and killed the Just One. They had, as Paul once had in his former life as Saul of Tarsus, hunted down, captured, and condemned His followers.

But the Apostle Paul had also dealt with those who professed to follow Christ, yet refused to turn away from the restrictions of Judaism. These were doubly wrong. They had seen the light of Christ, entered the fellowship of the saints, and then tried to turn those same saints away from the truth—the liberty that is in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Imagine being set free from bondage, only to put the shackles back on—and worse, insisting that others put them on too.

It is appropriate, right, even the responsible thing, to rebuke such behavior.

Set Free—Stay Free in Christ: Rebuking Error to Preserve Sound Faith

🔔 False doctrine often wears the mask of tradition. Titus 1:14 warns us not to give heed to Jewish fables or the commandments of men that turn us from the truth. Biblical rebuke—done in love—isn't cruelty; it's spiritual care.
