Titus 2:5 (KJV) Be Good

Titus 2:5 (KJV)

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

The context has to do with what the aged women ought to teach the younger ones. The preacher must teach the aged, more mature women in the church what they should teach the younger, less mature women.

It’s likely easier to divide them as aged and young than it is as mature and immature. The aged women, who are spiritually mature, would not be offended at being termed "aged," but the young ones, who are immature, would surely get offended at being classified as such.

The aged are to teach the younger. Among the things to teach is to be “good.”

Such a simple word. We all know it and know what it means.

Good.

There are good leaders, good parents, good employees, good soldiers, good kids.

It’s common for a parent to leave their children with a sitter and say simply, “Be good.”

“You aged women—teach the younger ones to be good.”

Okay. So what does that mean? It seems so obvious that we might skip over it.

So let’s not.

Here’s the Thayer definition:

  1. Of good constitution or nature
  2. Useful, salutary
  3. Good, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy
  4. Excellent, distinguished
  5. Upright, honourable

It’s all good! But I’d settle for this: pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy.

“You aged women—teach the younger ones to be good.”
