John 13:8-9 (KJV) Extremes

John 13:8-9 (KJV)

Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

Notice Peter’s extremes. I imagine it was because he did not grasp the nature of Jesus’ purpose in washing the disciples’ feet. He felt like it was beneath the Lord. Or, at the least, he felt like it was something someone else could have done to spare the Lord this menial task.

Thou shalt never wash my feet
I think we have this attitude about the spiritual work of Christ more than we wish. We get indignant that someone would think we needed our feet washed, that a sermon would bring conviction to our soul, that the Spirit would tug on our heart to kneel at an altar. Some of the most self-righteous people I’ve experienced never come to the altar.

Not my feet only, but also…
Once Peter realized this was a measure of spirituality, he wanted more than Christ offered. I’ve met those same people who, in a show of spirituality, almost make a scene to be spiritual.

In fact, in both cases, the problem is that their relationship with Christ isn’t yet solid. They can’t imagine they need to be clean then they can’t imagine they are clean. Their faith isn’t yet settled in the Lord.

Jesus didn’t rebuke Peter; He merely taught Peter. Then he moved to a new subject. It should not bother us to be instructed. We are, all of us, growing in Christ. Our relationship with Him is developing. Let it develop. Let the Lord develop it.

And, in the meantime, pray for those who have no relationship with the Lord.
