Ecclesiastes 10:7 (KJV) God Chooses The Humble

Ecclesiastes 10:7 (KJV)
I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.

The preacher sees this as a foolish and evil, though still a common thing, when one who ought to be a servant rises upon horses and one who ought to lead walks as a servant.

It is the way of this world that it sets up the worldly wise and ignores the heavenly wise. Though Satan gives kingdoms to those who will bow before him, of those chosen by God it is said,

1 Corinthians 1:26 (KJV)
For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called:

God chooses instead the weak and the humble.

1 Corinthians 1:27-28 (KJV)
But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;

And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are:

You may observe someone “upon horses.” (in a public, powerful, or high place). Do not assume they are there by God’s design.

Ecclesiastes 7:5 (KJV) The Song of Fools

Ecclesiastes 7:5 (KJV)
It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

The heavenly wisdom in the Ecclesiastes is such that it is almost irreconcilable in the hearts of men.

Chapter seven. Boldly claims:

  • The day of death is better than the day of birth
  • Sorrow is better than laughter
  • The house of mourning is better than the house of feasting

And then this, there is a song of fools.

The Word of God tells us that such songs exist and that it is not good to hear them.

  • Regardless how much we might relate
  • Regardless how soothing they might seem
  • Regardless how they might make our heart merry
  • Regardless how entertaining they may be

They are the songs of fools and it is not good the listen to them.

First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments.

Ecclesiastes 5:1 (KJV) More Evil

Ecclesiastes 5:1 (KJV)
Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

I’m thinking of the sacrifice of fools in the house of God. There are those who attend services of worship but, they do not “keep thy foot” or tread lightly, carefully, and with forethought. They do and say things, even in the house of God, which is evil.

Evil is an evil thing. How much more it is evil when it is done in God’s house.

  • We ought all be quick to be in attendance at God’s house
  • We ought never to allow our attendance to be so commonplace that we forget the awesome nature of it

Matthew 10:26 (KJV) Need Never Fear

Matthew 10:26 (KJV)
Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

We need never fear those who lie and deceive and cover the truth for the sake of their own gain. Our God has a perfect insight into all of these things. There will be some who are led astray by the cunning of Satan. All such cunning will be revealed at the right time.

When people speak evil of you, persuade friends to forsake you, lead movements against you, these were all things they did to Jesus. The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his Lord.

Ecclesiastes 1:12 (KJV) The Preacher Was King

Ecclesiastes 1:12 (KJV)
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

The term preacher isn’t necessarily an official position. I am the pastor of a church. That is a position. But my calling and my passion is preaching. In this case, the Preacher’s position was king in Jerusalem.

He said, “I was king”. We know this man to be Solomon. There was no time in his life when he used to be king. After he was crowned he remained king until his death. But by describing himself in this way he separates somewhat his role as preacher and that of the king.

The doctrine of separation of church and state is clearly taught in the Bible. But that only means the institution of the state must not control the church, nor should the institution of the church control the state. Every Christian ought to be interested in the affairs of government, especially in the United States where the people govern themselves.

Would be to God that every leader in government saw themselves as a preacher, responsible to learn and declare the truth of God’s Word.

Proverbs 31:2 (KJV) What, My Son?

Proverbs 31:2 (KJV)
What, my son? and what, the son of my womb? and what, the son of my vows?

Though I sure couldn’t prove it, I tend to believe Lemuel is a special name Solomon’s mother gave him. These words, all of them, are tender.

What my son?
The phrase is something like, “What shall I say?” Mom is struggling to say just the right words.

What the son of my womb?
My flesh and my blood. A very part of my being.

What the son of my vows?
As a promise to God. Solomon was no doubt a precious son. Born of Bathsheba to David after their initial sin. The first child dying, a second was conceived and God restored to them the joy of their salvation.

What do you say to your son, as perhaps your parting words, or what you consider to be your most important lessons to that boy?

Read on….

Matthew 7:28-29 (KJV) He Has Authority

Matthew 7:28-29 (KJV)
And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

The passage appears to belittle the scribes for preaching with little authority. Perhaps that is too strong an interpretation. Jesus taught as one having authority because He did have authority. If the scribes had attempted the same, it would have been wrong of them. They didn’t have any. Their function was the publication and explanation of the Scriptures. To remain there would be to their credit. To stray from there would be to their shame.

Matthew 6:34 (KJV) See If God Won’t Bless

Matthew 6:34 (KJV)
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

When I was in Bible College, I was taught that the Sermon on the Mount was an offer of the kingdom to the Jews. The result of this teaching is to dismiss the details of the Sermon as impracticable in today’s world. The Protestant teaching that the church of Jesus Christ did not begin until Acts 2 results in the same effect. “The Sermon on the Mount simply will not work today.” Some teachers of hyper dispensation turn the Gospels, especially Matthew, into books whose application finds place during the Tribulation. It produces the same effect; the Sermon on the Mount is impractical in today’s economy.

Of course, those same teachers will handpick certain phrases from the Sermon and make some application.

I challenge us that our place is to practice the Sermon on the Mount and see if God would not bless those who do so.

Proverbs 28:24 (KJV) The Companion of a Destroyer

Proverbs 28:24 (KJV)
Whoso robbeth his father or his mother, and saith, It is no transgression; the same is the companion of a destroyer.

Exodus 20:12 (KJV)
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

It’s the first commandment with promise and, according to the Bible quite the significant one.

The concept being taught here is that of taking parents for granted. That can be done in a number of ways:

  • Robbing them of attention
  • Robbing them of honor
  • Robbing them of valuables
  • Robbing them of dignity
  • Robbing them by assuming a loan from them does not have to be paid back

The family is the backbone of society. Without the family, neither governments nor churches (the three institutions created by God) can long prosper. To rob our parents is to teach our children to do the same, eventually teaching their children and children’s children, until the fabric of society is destroyed.

To rob our father and mother is to join with those who will eventually destroy our society.

First of all, thank you! It is a great joy to me to know you read the thoughts and lessons God has given me in His word. Secondly, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to leave comments.
