Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.
The whole trip from Caesarea to Rome is remarkable in many ways. Paul was a prisoner, and he was among prisoners. Yet he was also accompanied by certain friends, such as Luke and another, Aristarchus.
There are the conversations with the centurion Julius, who gave Paul leave to meet with friends at Sidon, listened to his advice onboard ship, prevented the prisoners from being harmed after the shipwreck, and here allowed Paul to tarry with the brethren a full week.
John Gill writes, “…no doubt by the leave, and with the consent of Julius the centurion; and which shows that he used the apostle with great civility and courteousness, and was very ready to grant him favours; if he was not in this voyage converted by him, which is not unlikely, considering the whole of his conduct…”
When one considers Paul’s testimony onboard ship—“I believe God”—and thinks of the conduct of both he and his companions, along with the testimony of the believers they met along the trip, it would be little wonder if Julius had trusted Christ.
I am reminded that a good relationship with the Lord can turn the most negative situations into some of the most productive seasons of the believer’s life.
Isn’t that better than the “why me” attitude of some professing Christians these days?
