2 Kings 14:3 (KJV) Critics Say the Bible Has Errors

2 Kings 14:3 (KJV)

And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, yet not like David his father: he did according to all things as Joash his father did.

At the risk of sounding a little snarky—and I truly don’t mean to—I can already hear someone mocking those of us who take the Bible seriously:
“The Bible says he had two fathers. That’s a mistake. Which one is his father—David or Joash?”

The answer is simple, and it is found by understanding how the Bible speaks.

There are many places in Scripture where the word father is used to refer not only to an immediate parent, but also to an ancestor—sometimes a grandfather or even generations beyond. In this case, David was Amaziah’s forefather many generations earlier.

So what is the real issue?

Being a literalist does not mean we force every word into a wooden, shallow reading. We recognize the way God actually communicated. The Bible uses history, grammar, metaphor, types, and figures of speech. We interpret it the way it was written—historically and grammatically.

We believe God said exactly what He meant to say. And when we read carefully, the so-called “errors” disappear.

Scoffers often think they have found a contradiction. In reality, they have only revealed a lack of understanding. It is true that the Bible must be understood spiritually. A person without salvation and without the help of the Holy Spirit will struggle to grasp its truth. But it is also true that the Bible is not an impossible book to understand.

There are depths we will not fully comprehend until we are in heaven. A perfect book, after all, cannot be fully exhausted by imperfect minds. But this is certain:

  • There are no errors in the Word of God.
  • Any fair-minded person who reads it honestly can see that.
