1 Chronicles 8:33 (KJV)David vs. Division

1 Chronicles 8:33 (KJV)

And Ner begat Kish, and Kish begat Saul, and Saul begat Jonathan, and Malchishua, and Abinadab, and Eshbaal.

My understanding of 1 and 2 Chronicles is that they were written to give the Jews returning from the Babylonian captivity a renewed sense of their history and heritage.

Central to that heritage is this: they—the southern kingdom of Judah—were the ones who remained identified with God’s chosen royal family, the house of David. The northern kingdom had already been carried away by Assyria, but Judah was preserved in connection to the promise God had made—that one from David’s line would rule in Jerusalem forever.

That promise ultimately finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

To remain true to David’s line was to remain true to God’s promise. And to remain true to that promise is to remain true to the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

It is no small thing to accept or reject the promises of God—even in what may seem like small details.

Here is an observation worth noting:
Benjamin—the tribe from which King Saul came, the king chosen by the people and the source of much early strife—eventually aligned not with rebellion, but with the promise of God.

There was ongoing tension during the reign of King David because of Saul’s house. That strain did not disappear quickly. Shimei, for example, rose up during Absalom’s rebellion and accused David of wrongdoing connected to Saul’s fall. Yet when the kingdom finally divided, the issue came down to this: would the people follow God’s ordained kingly line or reject it?

At that defining moment, Benjamin did not join the rebellion. They remained with Judah and with David’s house. Those who might have had reason to cling to offense chose instead to align with God’s plan. That is a powerful lesson.

It is never healthy to hold a grudge—especially one rooted in past wounds or inherited loyalties. God’s purposes move forward, and His promises remain sure.

Hold to His promise.
Stay faithful to His plan.
In the end, that is always the better path.
