Hebrews 1:2 (KJV) Struggling to Understand God?

Hebrews 1:2 (KJV)

Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

I consider the book of Hebrews to be one of the most sublime in all of Scripture. The pictures, the symbolism, and the treasures to be discovered are unending. But it is also one of the most challenging books for those who refuse to recognize that God’s thoughts are higher than our own.

God the Father has appointed His Son to be heir of all things.

At first glance, that can sound as though the Son is subordinate or somehow lesser than the Father.

And yet, the very next verse tells us exactly the opposite.

Hebrews 1:3 (KJV)
Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

How can Jesus be both appointed heir and the express image of His Person?

I would suggest that the remainder of this chapter—and indeed, the entire epistle—answers that question.

Here is something worth considering: how can a God who is infinitely higher than you and me be described in a way that is perfectly comprehensible to us?

He cannot.

Therefore, the Bible repeatedly uses language that we can understand to give us some insight—however limited—into the Person, character, and nature of Almighty God.

Are you a believer? Have you come to trust Christ as your only and eternal Saviour? Never fret—you will have all of eternity to discover the unsearchable riches of God.

Are you skeptical? Have you not yet placed your faith in Christ? Do so today. You say you do not have enough faith to believe. I say God has given you enough faith to respond. Simply do as He says: turn from self-trust to Christ, call upon Him to forgive your sins (you know you have sinned), join yourself to a fundamental, Bible-believing Baptist church, and allow yourself to be instructed in all things He has commanded.

You will never understand it all. But if you will believe and obey His command to call upon Christ, you will have all of eternity to grow in that understanding.
