1 Peter 5:11 (KJV)
To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
There are things that are true, and then there are truths we choose to live by.
This is truth.
All glory and all dominion belong to the Lord Jesus Christ, and they belong to Him forever and ever. We can do nothing to change it. It is settled in heaven. It is fact.
The word “amen” at the end means trustworthy, surely, firm.
This is a solid and absolute truth.
The words of men spoken in derision of Christ dim His glory in no way.
He outshines the sun. He outclasses the greatest of dignitaries. He is holy, pure, and undefiled (even undefinable).
The rebellion of men in no way diminishes His dominion.
He is Lord of lords and King of kings. He sets up authority and brings it down at His will. No vote of man alters the will of God. No military coup displaces the authorities of God’s choosing.
“For ever and ever.”
This has been true from the beginning of time. It has been true through the ages of mankind. It will be true throughout the eternal future.
We often think of the word “amen” as an appropriate ending to our requests, as if to say to the Lord, “These are my requests; let them be answered as surely as I have asked them.”
The text is viewed as a doxology, a prayer.
As true as the proclamation is, many still reject its truth. My prayer is that others would come to glorify God as God glorifies Himself. My prayer is also that I would live today in the light of truth rather than merely wishing it were true.
