And his name through faith in his name hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know: yea, the faith which is by him hath given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.
Witnesses.
The disciples had just said in the previous verse:
Acts 3:15 (KJV)
And killed the Prince of life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof we are witnesses.
They were witnesses that Christ had risen from the dead in the same way that their audience was a witness that the man standing before them had truly been healed. They knew him. They had seen him crippled, helpless, and begging daily at the gate of the temple.
No one questioned whether the healing was real. Their only question was the source. Some seemed to attribute it to the disciples themselves. But Peter and John were quick—insistent, even anxious—to turn all glory and credit to Jesus. More than that, they emphasized that it was the Jesus they had slain, who had risen from the dead, and who had given this man the “perfect soundness” they were witnessing.
It interests me that the disciples pulled no punches in placing responsibility on their audience for denying Christ and pressing Pilate toward crucifixion. Yet, just as quickly, they declared that the people—and their rulers—had done this in ignorance.
Acts 3:17 (KJV)
And now, brethren, I wot that through ignorance ye did it, as did also your rulers.
It was God’s will that Christ should suffer for the sins of the world. The only reasonable response, then, is given in verse 19:
Acts 3:19 (KJV)
Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
- The religious world that claims Christ is less than God…
- The liberal world that uses Christ merely as a moral example…
- The atheist world that denies Christ ever existed…
They all do these things in ignorance.
And just as Peter urged the Jews at the temple gate, they too are urged to repent, be converted, and come to know the Lord.
