Acts 7:56 (KJV)
And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
As the mob of Jews—the high priest included—grew angry toward Stephen, he looked up and saw “the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God” (Acts 7:55, KJV). But he said, “I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.”
John Gill writes that Stephen “calls Jesus ‘the Son of man’; a name by which He often called Himself in His state of humiliation; and that though He was now glorified, it being the name of the Messiah in Psalm 80:17, as was well known to the Jews.”
We are so prone to insist upon using our own definitions of terms to interpret what was written to and by people of an entirely different time and culture. In our day, Muslims, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and a host of other quasi-Christian religions insist that the Bible nowhere calls Jesus God. The fact is, the Jews of Jesus’ day knew exactly that this is what He claimed.
The term “Son of man” meant far more than that Jesus was human. It meant He was the Messiah—and that He was all the Bible ever taught the Messiah to be: the seed of the woman, not of man; the stone cut without hands; Emmanuel—God with us.
When the Jews heard Stephen say that he saw the Son of man standing on the right hand of God, they stopped their ears and ran upon him with one accord to silence his testimony. The Holy Ghost was convicting them of the truth of his words, but their hardened hearts refused to repent.
I am convinced this is the condition of many who feel compelled to argue endlessly about the person of Christ with those who testify of Him today. They know we speak the truth. The Holy Spirit tells them so. But they are hardened, and the devil has blinded their eyes. They refuse to repent and confess Christ as Lord.
“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”
